Historic Brawl Fest Event Guide and Decklists
Historic Brawl Fest is a weeklong event on MTG Arena that gives players an unlimited matchmaking queue for Historic Brawl. This is your chance to go wild, have fun and take a break from the competitive Standard and Historic queues. This event works similarly to the Brawler’s Guildhall events we’ve had in the past, before we were granted the permanent Brawl queue we have now. View our Historic Brawl decklists updated for Kaladesh Remastered, come up with your own, and share them with us!
The artificers of Kaladesh know how to blend the natural and the crafted, the new and old, to create something truly unique and amazing. Here at the Inventors’ Fair, all manner of masterworks are exhibited for the world to see.
What sparkling jewel will inspire your next creation? What unexpected or forgotten item will bring your invention together perfectly? If you can imagine it, you can find it here.
Bring a Brawl deck using any cards on MTG Arena – not just Standard! Change it at any time during the event. For more details on this format, including a list of banned cards, click here.

What is Historic Brawl?
As the name suggests, Historic Brawl is an extension of the regular Brawl format, which is dictated by Standard legal sets and rotation. We choose our Commander, a Legendary creature or a Planeswalker that we can cast as if they were in our hand (similar to Companions, which we can still use together), and create a singleton 60-card deck that ideally fits into your theme using any of the cards in MTG Arena!
The known banlist for Historic Brawl is as follows:
- Drannith Magistrate
- Gideon’s Intervention
- Runed Halo
- Nexus of Fate
- Meddling Mage
- Teferi, Time Raveler
- Lutri, the Spellchaser
- Winota, Joiner of Forces
- Oko, Thief of Crowns
- Golos, Tireless Pilgrim
- Sorcerous Spyglass
As for the logistics, Historic Brawl is not quite an “official” format yet as we can only play it in occasional events and direct challenges, coordinated through unofficial methods such as a Discord server. Wizards have said in the November State of the Game that they will use the play data from this event and another weeklong Historic Brawl queue starting in early January as they gauge interest in both Brawl formats to see if it can “support a healthy play environment simultaneously”.
The Historic format is undoubtedly more diverse and arguably more fun, as new sets and especially the Remastered sets are added retroactively will increase the card pool significantly. This should increase diversity, rather than seeing the same Commanders like we do in Standard Brawl. Ideally if both queues become available, we can even see regular Brawl not be played anymore especially with no rewards on the line, and it could even be merged with Historic Brawl to create one format.
Jodah, Archmage Eternal Historic Brawl Deck Video
Here is a game play video by Brewer’s Kitchen showcasing one of his decks featured here today. It demonstrates one of many possibilities we are able to achieve in this format!
Here are our Historic Brawl decks, all updated for this event. You can also click on the link to go to our dedicated section and see them all, including the older ones. We have added a tier of the deck also, indicating their general strength compared to the other decks. You’ll see the most powerful and consistent decks in tier 1 where the best cards are jammed together, almost similar to the tier 1 decks we see in regular Historic. Towards the bottom we’ll see more fun janky decks that rely on certain synergies or combos to work, which is harder to do in singleton decks.
We’ll be adding and updating more throughout the week, so check back later! If you have any that you wish to share leave a comment below or follow us on Twitter and show us your best brews.
