Theros: Beyond Death Previews – Allure of the Unknown

The official Magic: The Gathering Twitter account today revealed Allure of the Unknown, a rare black and red Sorcery spell depicting Pandora’s box, to be released with Theros: Beyond Death on January 16, 2020.

Allure of the Unknown’s effect allows you to draw five cards for five mana, but in exchange your opponent gets to choose a card from the revealed cards of his or her choice for free on the spot (cannot be saved for later on). Comparable to Escape to the Wilds from Throne of Eldraine, it will be interesting to see whether the drawback will make it worthwhile and relatively cost efficient card draw spell.

For example, if you are running a control deck with lots of removal spells, your opponent may not find a suitable target using any of your cards. If they happen to choose a planeswalker (e.g. Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God), hopefully your hand will be stocked well enough after using Allure of the Unknown to deal with it anyway the next turn. If the opponents are running Fires of Invention or you happen to have a Teferi, Time Raveler on your side, then the drawback can also be mitigated!

Here is also the official artwork, illustrated by Seb McKinnon.
