Theros: Beyond Death Previews – Mantle of the Wolf, Renata and Anax

Enjoy the following spoilers from the upcoming Theros: Beyond Death, to be released on January 16, 2020!

Mantle of the Wolf

Wow, this is a ton of stats! Auras have been a fairly maligned archetype in Magic, as they open you up to 2 for 1 removal, but this one gives you a lot of value even if it’s removed. +4/+4 kills very quickly, and your opponents really won’t have a lot of time to deal with the creature.

It is a bit weak to bounce and exile effects, but the amount of value provided could be enough for some niche Constructed decks, perhaps those with Siona

Renata, Called to the Hunt

Renata is a good Draft card, offering a permanent buff to any creature that comes after her and being capable of hitting for a lot of damage. If you can give her trample or evasion, she can very quickly run away with the game, and she enables your enchantment synergies to boot. The buff is especially strong if you can generate a bunch of tokens in Selesnya perhaps..

I would take Renata at about a high 3.0 or low 3.5 level on the LSV draft rating scale. Sadly, she’s a bit too weak for most Constructed formats, but it’s possible that she’d be good enough for Selesnya Tokens or a green Enchantment deck in Artisan.

Anax, Hardened in the Forge

Anax is a really good draft card – his base case is just excellent as a creature that will often have 4 attack, and will generate two Satyrs when he dies. He’s especially good in Rakdos, as he gives you value for sacrificing things, and generates even more things you can sacrifice. It’s a shame the 1/1s can’t block (and very important that they can’t), but potentially generating two each time one of your creatures dies in Gruul can quickly overwhelm your opponent. As always with tokens, buffs make Anax better too. I would take Anax at a 3.5 level in Draft.

Anax could make it into Standard as he’s a very efficient beater in Mono Red that’s annoying to remove; his tokens trigger Cavalcade of Calamity and are great with Torbran too!
