Theros: Beyond Death Previews – Reverent Hoplite and Chainweb Aracnir

Hall of Famer and Magic Pro League member Seth Manfield today revealed two cards from the upcoming Theros: Beyond Death that showcases the two mechanics of the set – Devotion and Escape!

Reverent Hoplite

thb-033-reverent-hoplite

Reverent Hoplite is a five mana white creature that creates 1/1 tokens based on the amount of devotion to white you have. This is comparable to the recently revealed Gray Merchant of Asphodel, and it looks like we will be getting a cycle of these cards in each color (the other example being Nylea’s Huntmaster).

On the surface this card looks like a weak card made for limited formats, but a mono white devotion deck featuring cards revealed so far looks interesting.

Combined with Daxos, Blessed by the Sun and Heliod, Sun-Crowned, Reverent Hoplite can create an additional +1/+1 counter for each creature, and if they survive to attack the next turn, cards like Linden, the Steadfast Queen can pump them up further. This also makes cards like Charming Prince better!

Seth Manfield wrote an article on this preview card at TCGPlayer, so be sure to give that a read as well for further insights.

Chainweb Aracnir

thb-167-chainweb-aracnir

Chainweb Aracnir is a one mana green creature with reach and the new Escape mechanic. This card is packed with abilities, and the first one is similar to Kraul Harpooner. In Standard the most relevant target is Gilded Goose, which unfortunately it cannot deal with on the first turn. However, it does Escape as a 4/5, which should be able to deal with many other flying creatures.
