Theros: Beyond Death Previews – Shoal Kraken, Naiad of Hidden Coves and Vexing Gull
Theros: Beyond Death will be released on January 16, 2020.
Naiad of Hidden Coves
Naiad of Hidden Coves could conceivably make it into Constructed, but it would take a very niche deck – one that both cares about Enchantments and Flash cards. T4 Naiad + hold up Quench or Negate sounds appealing in that deck, but without those two specific circumstances the card seems a bit too low impact. However, I could see it in the Artisan formats in one of the enchantment decks that’s likely to spawn as a result of Theros: Beyond Death!
In Limited however, Naiad is a pretty strong card – enabling your enchantment synergy and ramping you to your Flash cards and instants. There’s an entire Limited mechanic designed casting your first spell on your opponent’s turn to get additional value. I would take Naiad at about 3.0 level using the LSV draft rating scale.
This sea monster looks a bit bigger than its statline suggests when facing up to that lighthouse; as expected from Theros: Beyond Death at this point, we have great art! Shoal Kraken, though it is sadly unlikely to ever find a home in Constructed, is a really strong Limited card. We saw how good a strong blocking statline combined with the ability to loot away lands in the late game can be with Sage of the Falls. While Shoal Kraken will be slightly harder to trigger for some decks, it blocks more things profitably.
I would recommend taking Shoal Kraken at about 3.5 using the LSV draft rating scale.
Vexing Gull is a nice common for limited play, which you can ideally use a combat trick and use as an evasive creature to attack with afterwards.
