Theros: Beyond Death Previews – Thryx, the Sudden Storm & Whirlwind Denial
Enjoy the following spoilers from the upcoming Theros: Beyond Death, to be released on January 16, 2020!
Thryx, the Sudden Storm
As a giant flash creature, your opponents will always have to fear that you could have Thyrx and eat their best creature when you have 5 mana up in blue! The card could be powerful enough just on the basis that you don’t have to tap out in decks like Simic or Izzet Flash. The final ability is a bit restrictive, but it is nice to make your Hydroid Krases, Gadwicks and Nissas cost 1 less and be uncounterable – that could easily represent an extra draw with the first two, and the final two are premium counterspell targets.
Thryx also screams Commander and Brawl staple, since those formats are a lot more top-heavy and can make better use of his effect!
Whirlwind Denial is a cute cross between Summary Dismissal and Convolute. It threatens any spell, but also any pesky triggered or activated abilities your opponents have too; it is a cleaner answer to Gadwick, the Wizened and Hydroid Krasis than you can get anywhere else and on that basis, could see some Constructed play.
However, it’s quite a bad rate – Counterspells that are so situational at 3 mana don’t generally see much play, and one has to consider whether it’s worth it to run over Mystical Dispute, which is an awkward main deck card to begin but has colossal upside against some decks. It is nice that Whirlwind Denial counters unless they pay 4 rather than 3, so it will function as a hard counter more of the time, so it could get the nod on that basis.
