- MTG Arena Historic Mythic Decks of the Week
We have come to the end of the second week of the July 2020 ranked season as the Magic: The Gathering world prepares for an eventful next few weeks. Standard has a big tournament coming up this weekend, the Players Tour Finals, to shape the metagame going forward. For Historic, two cards have just been banned, and we have two set releases coming up (Jumpstart on July 16 and Amonkhet Remastered in August) to inject hundreds of more cards into the format. MTG Arena Standard Mythic Decks of the Week
It’s no surprise that Standard is dominated by the two green and blue ramp decks, Temur Reclamation and Bant Ramp. The two big Standard tournaments over the past weekend concluded with both of these decks taking the first place prize each. Neither of these decks needed any Core Set 2021 cards (except for the single copy of Elder Gargaroth in the sideboard) to achieve these results, which forecasts a grim outlook for Standard for the next two months until Standard rotation. Check out the results and decks from these events below:
As always, we will discuss some interesting decks and card choices from the Mythic decks this week, but you can find the full listing further below, sorted by their highest placing!
Bant Ramp by Oliver Tiu – #1 Mythic
Oliver reached #1 during his stream with this version of Bant Ramp! Jolrael and the new Teferi make appearances as flex slots, but nonetheless have played a role in the deck’s success. Both cards have been popping up in various Simic-based decks as well, especially Jolrael as she is relevant at all points of the game. Elder Gargaroth has also been showing up in sideboards of green decks to fight against opposing creature decks. Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is now being left out, as players find out that it’s not necessary to the deck’s strategy as it has plenty of controlling elements and win conditions to close out the game.
As a side note, Oliver will be writing a full guide for the deck soon for the competitive players out there that want to conquer the ladder and events, so keep an eye out for it in the next few days!
– Rakdos Jegantha Sacrifice by ganp – #2 Mythic
– Jund Sacrifice by ganp – #11 Mythic
The Sacrifice decks are well positioned in Standard, perhaps not too far behind the ramp decks. The edge goes to the Rakdos version currently for its favorable matchup against aggro decks and being able to sustain constant pressure to opponents – be sure to check out our latest Rakdos Sacrifice deck guide! The Jund version represents a longer, value-oriented game plan based around Trail of Crumbs and Korvold, Fae-Cursed King and is a bit slower, but still good enough to hold its own. Ganp has two lists this week for us that they are using to hold high Mythic ranks this season that has some interesting card choices from Core Set 2021.
Kitesail Freebooter gives the deck a creature that can disrupt the opponent and can be used as sacrifice fodder later on in the game if needed. Liliana’s Standard Bearer is an alternative to the soon-to-rotate Midnight Reaper that serves to replenish your hand, but plays a little bit differently. It can be used after removal spells and board wipes, and looks to be much better positioned once Teferi, Time Raveler rotates out.
Llanowar Visionary and Solemn Simulacrum makes their appearance in the Jund list, as they can replace themselves, ramp and act as a sacrifice fodder at the same time is a great fit for the deck. It should be noted that the Elf Druid showing up in more decks as people realize its power. It’s definitely no Uro, but leaving a body on the board on the first cast can be more useful in some cases and could be a key player in the new Standard.

– Mono White Aggro by hughesco – #866 Mythic
White-based aggro decks look like strong contenders post-rotation, receiving some strong card options in Core Set 2021. Last week we showcased a lifegain deck, and this week we have decks that just pump out creatures regardless of what your opponents are doing. In Standard, we have Mono White and Boros, and both are pretty close. The over performers in both of these decks are Selfless Savior and Seasoned Hallowblade because they are resilient to removal spells which these kind of decks are typically weak to.
Simic Flash by KillaDub – #96 Mythic
The deck name is “Simic Flash” but not quite what most players are familiar with. KillaDub (check out his stream!) has created a more of a higher curve, creature-based Flash deck that features Cunning Nightbonder and the powerful combination of Rewind and Nightpack Ambusher. Dream Eater and Voracious Greatshark make their appearance as a key part of the deck also, as they present strong tempo plays and a fast clock to match. This is a very fun deck but one that I would not want to face against! On the other hand, “stock” Simic Flash decks are also showing varying success on the ladder, but currently have not proven themselves in a tournament environment.

Some players are branching out with Yorion strategies, following the success of Orzhov Yorion before the release of Core Set 2021. While it is still a tall order for it to overcome the top tier decks, it turns out that the Companion mechanic can be balanced if the deck is correctly built around it.
MTG Arena Historic Mythic Decks of the Week
Historic has just seen the additional banning of Burning-Tree Emissary and Nexus of Fate (read announcement here), which targeted the two dominant forces of the format – Gruul Aggro and Simic/Bant Nexus. As previously mentioned, we also have a lot coming up over the next few months as Historic sees more support in terms of new cards and tournament coverage! You can see all the information in our guide here, but to summarize the schedule of events to come:
- July 16th: Jumpstart release and the bans take into effect
- August 1st: The Arena Open tournament
- August 18th (predicted): Amonkhet Remastered release
- September 10th: Mythic Invitational 2020
- Septmeber 24th (predicted): Zendikar Rising release
Hopefully, we will see the format open up and become more exciting as new cards are introduced! With this week’s Historic decks, we have one Nexus of Fate deck here but you can start playing the other ones below without worry as they are not affected by the bans.
