BO1 Selesnya Ascension by Mitch Spade – #14 Mythic – December 2020 Ranked Season

For those of you confused about how the deck operates, its an aggro deck focused around playing lots of small creatures, and quickly transforming them into 4 power beaters.

Swarm Shambler and Stonecoil Serpent are your main targets, and are usually played turn 1. We are looking to play Kenrith’s Transformation on turn 2 so we can swing in with our 4/4 elk and start building pressure. Angelic Ascension, The First Iroan Games, and Luminarch’s Aspirant provide more ways to grow your small creatures. Questing Beast tops our curve with another haste creature to swing in on turn 4. Skyclave Apparition also has some interesting synergy with Kenrith’s Transformation because it grows the apparition and prevents the opponent from getting a token when it dies. Finally, Alseid of Life’s Bounty and Selfless Savior provide protection for your threats, more targets for ascension, as well as some added evasion to push through lethal damage.

The deck had about a 65% win rate overall, and reached #14 on the mythic ladder in December 2020. I found it particularly good against red, green, and white decks, where there is less instant speed interaction to disrupt you, and your threats just come down bigger and faster than theirs do. It struggled most against dimir rogues and temur adventures, where you’re never really sure if you can transform safely because they have so many instant speed threats.
