The Lost Caverns of Ixalan (LCI) Combos and Synergies Guide

In this guide, we go over some combos and synergies for The Lost Caverns of Ixalan (LCI).

Hey everyone! We’ve finally completed our journey through the set review of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. It took a while and got a little hairy in some spots, but we’ll chalk it up as a win. Today we’re moving on to discuss some combos and synergies to look out for when you’re jamming some LCI drafts.

I’ll be keeping it mostly to commons and uncommons because you are far more likely to run into them then the rares. Maybe I’ll do one or two rares at the end for funsies.

Zoetic Glyph and Diamond Pick-Axe

While I’m not thrilled to give up all of the future treasury goodness from my pick-axe, having a 5/4 indestructible creature can wreak some serious havoc. A lot of decks aren’t going to be able to deal with that.

I do have to add the PSA that Join the Dead will still kill an indestructible creature.  If you suspect that they are holding that, you might want to just make a treasure to throw this on instead. You should avoid playing it into a Tithing Blade as well.

Mischievous Pup and Tinker’s Tote

After you’ve unpacked your tote of gnomes this pup comes barreling in to run off with the packaging. Luckily when you get it back from him, it’s been magically refueled so you can get more little gnomies to continue going wide. What a good boi!

Chart a Course and Defossilize

Did you draw one of your expensive monsters that you were hoping to self-mill? Chart a Course to victory by tossing it in the bin and bringing that bad boy right back to destroy any hopes your opponent had of having a good day.

Caparocti Sunborn and Diamond Pick-Axe

The Diamond Pick-Axe makes a second appearance on this list. I know I mentioned this during set reviews, but I felt it was worth running back for the rest of the peanut gallery.

You can stack this so that you make the treasure first then trigger the ability by tapping that new treasure and the pick-axe itself. It’s a sweet little combo that takes you on a one-way trip to value town.

Sunshot Militia and Volatile Wanderglyph

When you run out of ways to force your attacks through, then Sunshot Militia will let you finish the game off by pinging away at your opponent. Combined with the Volatile Wanderglyph, it lets you rummage away to make sure that you can find enough gas to stay alive long enough to get across the finish line.

Ironpaw Aspirant and Ruin-Lurker Bat

This is an amazing way to kick off the game by getting a decent aerial lifelinker swinging in on turn two. You can further supplement it with equipment or map tokens if you feel the need, but this is a great start that will immediately put them on the back foot.

Kinjalli’s Dawnrunner and Staggering Size

Do you want Embercleave? Because this is how you get Embercleave.

I am required to point out anytime there is an Embercleave situation so that people can do the math appropriately when they are blocking.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen someone throw away a game they had wrapped up because they didn’t account for that possibility when they could have thrown another blocker on there for safety.

Pirate Hat and Buried Treasure

What am I doing throwing two janky cards on here together? Is it because I’m throwing a pirate party like it’s Gasparilla? Well, like Vegas what happens there, stays there so I won’t be publicly disclosing anything I may or may not have done there. I assure you that there is a Magic related reason for this.

The best use of Buried Treasure is getting into your graveyard without going down a card to get it there. You could hope to self-mill it, but a looting or rummaging effect is a less random way to do so. You could also use something like Chart a Course or Volatile Wanderglyph, but I choose to use the Pirate Hat for theming purposes.

Captain Storm, Cosmium Raider and Threefold Thunderhulk

The good captain loves anything that makes multiple artifacts. I could have just put Tinker's Tote but I wanted to go crazy instead. The hulk drops four counters on pirates when it comes into play with the potential for many more every turn when it attacks. If they somehow survive the onslaught of gnomes, they will surely succumb to your newly buffed pirate army.

Bedrock Tortoise and Market Gnome

You won’t be coming out of the gates slow with this tortoise. It comes in hitting hard, but it also means that your little innocent Market Gnome finally gets tired of everyone trying to beat them down on their prices. The only beat down will be the one they’ll be receiving.

I could also mention that Bedrock Tortoise makes cards such as Soaring Sandwing much better too, but who doesn’t want to see what happens when Market Gnomes go wild.
