Foundations isthe latest set to be the backbone in standard and pioneer with many changes and objetives in mind, here is a look to what’s coming!
BURST LIGHTNING
8/10
We are starting with a solid reprint from Zendikar times.
A improved Shock that just adds value at the later stages of the game and 4 colorless mana Kicker with ample of room for color splashing makes this card a great inclusion into Foundations
LEYLINE AXE
4/10
Let’s dive into a new Leyline typing: Axe edition.
A powerful equipment with two practical keywords Double Strike and Trample, kind of costly to get it to work even if you manage to protect your creatures, but the payoff is amazing, swing with early creatures if you are able to get this in play turn 0.
SIRE OF SEVEN DEATHS
7/10
Talk about storytelling a 7 colorless mana, 7 keywords 7/7 Eldrazi.
I often don’t approve the use of counterspells, but here you just look at that monstrosity, I surely don’t want to pay a third of my life count just to try get rid of it. This might show up in ramp decks with Up the beanstalk or in reanimator decks with Rite of the moth.
AN OFFER YOU CAN’T REFUSE
6/10
Back to reprints, I have mixed feelings on this one as this is a spell that can quickly dominate the later stages of a matchup with just a single blue mana available, imagine that critical Sunfall that might save the match to your favor being countered by a single blue mana spell.
Nonetheless I recognize this card powerful capabilities and enabling two treasure tokens to your opponent might play against you in the subsequent turns.
KOMA, WORLD-EATER
8/10
Your favorite difficult to deal with Serpent is back.
an impressive 8/12 for 7 mana value, protected against counterspells and to top it off Ward 4, this is going to be a Simic match that will just go into defense until this thing hits the battlefield, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this card ends up in reanimator decks.
Deathtouch blockers are going to be up in value from what we are getting in Foundations
VENGEFUL BLOODWITCH
7/10
A toned down Blood Artist, so you have probably guessed it by now how powerful this card is, with the current state of tokens being available in many different ways with caretaker's talent, and Zoraline, Cosmos Caller reanimating the little fellas all the time, my guess is this card is going to show up a lot as Blood Artist once did.
MENTOR OF THE MEEK
5/10
On that token note, Mentor of the Meek makes a return, let’s get that draw card engine going, but in my experience getting one draw in per turn is enough you need resources available for protection, get them on the battlefield and play timely according as your opponent deals with your threats
ELECTRODUPLICATE
10/10
Copying a creature is always synonym of value, getting to duplicate a threat for 3 is amazing.
This is an enabler card it can get a combo going, duplicate an engine piece to your advantage.
What’s freighting to deal with in here is the flashback option, you know eventually every creature that hits play might eventually duplicate and its terrible to deal with.
KAITO, CUNNING INFILTRATOR
7/10
Kaito goes in for a mono blue approach, with a powerful blue signature static ability, let your unblockables deal damage and put a loyalty counter on Kaito, draw a card, then discard, and its all built in the card.
I’d say the ultimate ability is quite situational to a later stage in the game, but let’s wait and see what happens
SCAVENGING OOZE
9/10
And at last my favorite reprint so far, the mighty return of Scavenging Ooze, a powerful 2 mana drop 2/2 with a graveyard dealing ability that might shut down some archetypes running around, starting with the Abhorrent occulus Azorius breadwinner, the Occulus is often reanimated, well guess what? with the Ooze around that won’t happen, and don’t get me started on proper reanimator decks.
And also life gain source, this guy is just amazing
Some Thoughts
Foundations takes me back when I started playing MTG in 2009 with M10 and eventually Zendikar, so is sight to behold all of these cards from back then making a return and remembering what was played at the time, with also some new iterations and modern strategies taking place, so let’s see what Foundations ends up packing as the next backbone set to come.
Here’s a blessing to get protect your spells from being counterspelled, until the next one Code OUT!
