Free 1,500 MTG Arena Gems for Magic Spellslingers Players – Game Announces Shut Down

Another card game bites the dust, and the inevitable end to Magic Spellslingers has come after months of speculation, silence, and meaningful updates. Its origins came from way back in 2019 as Magic’s answer to Hearthstone. As of June 4, 2024, the game will be shut down and existing players get free 1,500 MTG Arena gems to boot. Magic Spellslingers Announces Sunset

Magic Spellslingers had officially launched in August 10, 2022 after being in soft launch since 2019. Originally titled “Valor’s Reach”, the game was designed as a mobile card battler similar to games like Hearthstone, but with Magic’s intellectual property. The game has finally announced that it will be ending its service on June 4, 2024.

It is with both gratitude and sorrow that we are announcing the sunset of Magic Spellslingers.

Starting March 6, all in-game cash purchases will be turned off. The game servers will continue to operate until noon Pacific time on June 4, 2024.

Since its global launch, the game has received sporadic updates introducing new Spellslingers but barely any new cards to keep players interested. The writing was on the wall for a good while now, as its outdated concept could not compete with the likes of Marvel Snap or even Hearthstone that has been adding new game modes. Its last major update was on March 14, 2023!

At its core, it was not a bad game by any stretch (we even we covered the game briefly), but unfortunately, similarly to what Warcraft Rumble is going through right now with Blizzard, the game came out too late and its level of support was too low to keep players engaged.

So About Those 1,500 MTG Arena Gems…

A gift of 1,500 MTG Arena Gems are available to claim for players who first played Magic Spellslingers before March 6, 2024 (i.e. this announcement). That’s a surprisingly generous amount, so if you think you played it even once, make sure to check! Instructions are noted below.

Conclusion

Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast has undergone a big layoff this year, and this also affected MTG Arena. With communication and game issues being more apparent than it was before – while MTG Arena is not likely to shut down like Magic Spellslingers anytime soon, it seems to be barely keeping up with just adding new cards to the client. At least we can hope that Pioneer or Modern will come in the next few years… Right?

Having said all that, it’s not all doom and gloom for card gamers despite many other digital card games shutting down or winding down their development (DC Dual Force, Eternal, Gwent, Duelyst, Artifact, Legends of Runeterra, and many more). It seems actual tabletop physical trading card games are still in high demand more than ever.

Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, and Yu-Gi-Oh! are still going strong after more than 20 years, and new ones such as One Piece Card Game and Disney Lorcana are in high demand. Pokémon has even announced a new mobile version of its card game – Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, so we got that to look forward to!
