Greasefang, Okiba Boss art by Victor Adame Minguez

Historic Mardu Greasefang Combo – Featured Deck

Winning with style isn’t easy. Generally you just have to play your best cards, outvalue or outrace the opponent and then you just win? Yawn. Winning by playing a bunch of planeswalkers? Wake me up when it’s over. Winning by attacking with a huge vehicle that pops out twin Angels? Now that’s what I’m talking about!

Since Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty released, Historic has gained another super cool deck with the printing of Greasefang, Okiba Boss. Greasefang allows you to reanimate a hasty vehicle once per turn (at the cost of bouncing it afterwards) so if you have a huge vehicle in your yard, you can get some insane value! Let’s take a look at the deck.

Deck Information

At the heart of the deck, you’re completely focused on two cards: Greasefang, Okiba Boss and Parhelion II. You’re looking to get a Parhelion in your graveyard, get a Greasefang on board, then attack for 13 in the air while keeping two Angel tokens which should end pretty much any game on the spot. There are a lot of ways to approach the list, but my personal favorite is going all in on that plan.

For this combo to work, getting a Parhelion in the graveyard is a huge priority. To help with that, we have a lot of cards that get a lot of cards in the graveyard quickly! Stitcher's Supplier and Undead Butler are nice early game blockers that put minimum 3 cards in the graveyard. Faithless Looting is excellent for card filtering and obviously getting a Parhelion in your graveyard.

The best yet though, Goblin Engineer doesn’t mill, but allows you to tutor for a Vehicle and put it into your graveyard! Having all these increases your deck’s consistency by a phenomenal amount and also greatly increases the odds of putting a Parhelion in your graveyard turn 2.

The second half of the deck is ensuring a Greasefang, Okiba Boss gets onto the board and stays there. Since we have so much self mill, this version plays 4 Can't Stay Away and 2 Revival to further increase the deck’s consistency! Now if you naturally draw a Greasefang or mill it over, it’s very likely that you’ll be able to have it on board in short order. Furthermore, this heavily insulates the deck from removal as it may stall the combo for a turn or so, but will hardly keep it down for long.

For the final few aspects of the deck: we have 4 Bone Shards to add some more ways to stock the graveyard as well as interact with the opponent, one Skysovereign, Consul Flagship for an additional powerful vehicle and interaction, and 2 Wishclaw Talisman to further increase the deck’s consistency. This deck’s greatest strength and weakness is how straight forward it is thus it makes a better Bo1 deck than Bo3, but it’s certainly an extremely powerful strategy nevertheless!

Tips and Tricks

  • Don’t be afraid to aggressively filter with Faithless Looting in the early game even if you can’t bin a Parhelion. This deck is looking to combo ASAP so it’s ok to get a bit risky.
  • If you have multiple creatures out and need more looks for the combo, you can use Bone Shards to sacrifice a Undead Butler or Stitcher's Supplier and even kill your own creature if you have to. You’ll likely only make this play in desperation, but it’s something to consider.
  • If you somehow have a Wishclaw Talisman in play and the other in graveyard with a Goblin Engineer out, you can activate your Wishclaw Talisman with priority, and before the trigger resolves, you can sacrifice it to get the other back and deny your opponent a tutor.
