MTG Arena Mythic Decks of August 2023 – Week 1

Feeling lost on what to play this week? Try these innovative decks that players used to reach Mythic this season!

Hi! I am Vertyx, and I would like to welcome you to my Mythic Decks of the Week article for the first week of August 2023! I will go over the most interesting decks that made it to Mythic on MTG Arena last week. First weeks of the month are usually not that rich on interesting decks and because of that reason we unfortunately only got 5 decks to cover, but on the other side they look pretty cool! Lets go look at them!

First one to cover is Standard Dimir Invasion by Tulio Jaudy!

Dimir Midrange decks have been getting really popular recently, but they are usually a bit different from this variant. Most of the decks are staying low to the ground and trying to close the game fast if its possible, but this deck isn’t scared of the game going longer since it has a lot of expensive late game threats! Instead of playing a lot of 1 and 2 drops, the threat package in this deck starts at 3 mana with Graveyard Trespasser and ends with some bombs like Sheoldred // The true Scriptures or Cemetery Desecrator. For that reason the deck also plays way more interaction in the form of Cut Down, Go for the throat, Make Disappear, Sheoldred's Edict and a few removal battles so it is able to slow the board down against faster decks. When threats aren’t the biggest problem you also got 4 copies of Invasion of Amonkhet which is a nice way to gain a small card advantage, force the opponent to discard and get a strong creature later in the game.

This deck for certain doesn’t fear the late game with its expensive threats

Moving to explorer, lets go take a look at Grixis Midrange by TheNerdySteve!

This one might feel like a resurrection from the dead! Originally being created as a brew for the Regional Championship in USA (format Pioneer) this deck was made to attack the expected meta with its interesting playstyle. It saw some popularity after it but pretty quickly disappeared and now we see that it might be back for Explorer!

Looking at the deck might feel like a normal Grixis Midrange list that plays the “classic” cards like Bloodtithe harvester, Fable of the mirror-breaker or Thoughtseize but then things start to look different with 4 copies of Archfiend of the Dross and Metamorphic Alteration. If you closely read the cards it might seem weird to play them, especially Metamorphic Alteration, but there is actually a game winning combo involving both of them!

You start by casting Archfiend of the Dross. When you got that on the battlefield you need a target for Metamorphic Alteration which has to be one of opponents creatures. You make one of their creatures a copy of Archfiend but since it was already on the battlefield it doesn’t enter with any oil counters! And when Archfiend has 0 oil counters it makes them loose the game in their upkeep thanks to its ability. So if everything goes well you win the game as long as you pass the turn.

Moving onto events but staying in explorer, lets take a look at Mono-Red Aggro by MTGADailyChallenge!

From the deck’s name it may just look like a normal mono-red aggro deck, but this one is more interesting since its centered around artifacts. You got your staple aggro cards like Monastery Swiftspear or Play With Fire but you also have a lot of artifact synergies. The best part of the artifact synergy starts with Experimental Synthesizer which even on its own is a powerful card advantage engine, but you abuse it to its fullest with Gleeful Demolition and Shrapnel Blast which gives you a strong benefit on top of getting a card from the Synthesizer! Of course you also got other artifact enablers like Voldaren Epicure or Reinforced Ronin but the above mentioned one is the strongest.

This deck is really fast but its also able to grind quite well when the games get longer making it very versatile against the field.

Moving to historic lets go take a look at Historic Azorius Affinity by FloppyTacoMtG!

This deck is also centered around artifacts but you probably figured that from the name already. Almost every card in the deck is an artifact or it interacts with them in some way. The curve starts really low with Esper Sentinel, Ornithopter or Vault Skirge so it gets the board full of cheap artifacts early. The deck wants to do that for a good reason and that is the 2 drop slot with Ensoul Artifact, All that Glitters or Michiko's Reign of Truth where both of them are able to grow your small creatures into a big threat very early. Thanks to those cards you are able to close the game really fast but if games get longer you got Thought Monitor to refuel you and Metallic Rebuke to protect your threats!

And the last deck, from the same pilot and even the list being very similiar is Historic Boros Affinity by FloppyTacoMtG!

Another affinity list with a lot of similar cards but in Boros instead of Azorius. The threats also start at very low mana costs with Esper Sentinel, Toolcraft Exemplar and Ingenious Smith. Then the 2 drop slot also contains cards that pump your threats and those are Yotia Declares War and Michiko's Reign of Truth, this decklists doesn’t have that many as the Azorius version but instead has more cheap threats so it doesn’t rely on these effects that much. This deck is not that good at grinding when the game goes longer, but it should be able to close the game even faster thanks to Shrapnel Blast.

Thats it for today, stay tuned for the next weeks article where we will hopefuly have more lists to cover! I hope you enjoyed it and see you soon!
