Now that we’ve had some time to play with some of the new cards, I figured I’d write about some of the combos and synergies I’ve found thus far. I’m going to keep the examples restricted to commons and uncommons, to keep it somewhat realistic.
Geothermal Kami can do some amazing things in Neon Dynasty. The most obvious synergy that would come to mind is bouncing sagas, duh. This can be great, but often will lose too much tempo or your potential to push damage.
My current favorite card to bounce with Geothermal Kami is Gloomshrieker. This combo is especially strong if Kami is in your graveyard. For 7 mana, you can play Gloomshrieker, get Kami and return Gloomshrieker to hand for further returns, and gain 3 life! This loop can do some serious work, especially if your opponent can’t trade profitably with the 4/3.
There’s quite a few nice things to do with anvil, in addition to it just being a strong card on it’s own. Dockside Chef will allow you to draw a card each turn while replacing a token. Undercity Scrounger also combos nicely here. Sacrificing treasures triggers the Anvil’s passive of creating a construct and sacrificing constructs will allow you to create treasures!
Dragonspark Reactor is a card that I’m not a huge fan of, but I’d be lying if I haven’t been Zenith Flared by this in conjunction with the anvil. Considering every time you make a construct token, you get a counter on reactor this makes the card a literal ticking time bomb.
The first thing you think of with Containment Construct would be channel spells, but the fact is there are very few channel spells where you will be able to pay the channel cost and the regular casting cost of the card.
Alright, this one’s not too much of a combo, but I would be remiss if I didn’t dredge up the time I got owned by this card in combination of Ninja's Kunai.
Obviously, both the General and Norika Yamazaki, the Poet need to be addressed before they accrue too much value, but with something like Kunai being recurred you can keep taking out blockers if they’re not big enough or even start Lightning Bolting your opponents face if you have enough Samurai.
Circuit Mender is such an overperformer in this set. While a completely solid card at face value, there’s a lot of ways to enable the card draw – which triggers when it “Leaves Play”. The bread and butter value of this card is ninjas, and because Circuit Mender has both an enter the battlefield and leave play trigger, you end up getting crazy value.
While I find this card to be largely unexciting, especially since the backside of sagas have no mana cost, there are some creatures that this can really shine with.
Greater Tanuki will be a common card to combine here as it’s the biggest green creature with trample – making this doggo a 12/11 trample isn’t a bad deal for 2 mana.
Walking Skyscraper is another great target for this, another huge trampler, and you can also just pump something else up for +8/+8 if that is somehow a better play.
I just want to put into writing some technical aspects of ninjutsu that I hope helps someone. Ninjas combo best with other ninjas. Some don’t know that you can ninjitsu multiple times on the same attacker, or “splice onto ninja”. When you have an unblocked attacker, and you have multiple ninja’s you can chain them together for some crazy value.
Let’s say you have a Moonsnare Specialist and a Moon-Circuit Hacker – you can ninjutsu in the specialist to bounce something and then return the specialist to your hand to ninjitsu in the hacker to draw a card.
Also, a side note that may come up, there is a step after combat damage where if you still have an unblocked attacker (full control required), where you can ninjitsu something into play.
Alright this one’s a gimme, but Spinning Wheel Kick + a deathtoucher can lead to some huge swings. The two most common creatures you will see this combined with are Fang of Shigeki and Kappa Tech-Wrecker, though there are a couple deathtouchers in black.
Skyturtle might be my favorite card of the set. It’s easy to splash, hard to deal with, and has so much versatility! The main combo I wanted to highlight with the flying turtle is Season of Renewal + the Regrowth channel option. This is an infinite combo where you can keep bouncing things or eventually return all of your creatures + enchantments from your graveyard to your hand.
Alright, hear me out. Futurist Operative + Enormous Energy Blade, boom. For 5 mana, you can equip the blade, untap and attack with a 5/1 unblockable. Okay, fine – I tried to scour for any reason to play Enormous Energy Blade, and couldn’t find one. Two unplayable cards combined don’t make either of them playable, don’t try this at home kids.
I’ve been having a blast with the new set, and there’s still so much more to discover! I’d love to hear some of your favorite combos in the comments!
