Next Thursday on August 13, MTG Arena is set to undergo its monthly game update with its major feature introducing the new Amonkhet Remastered cards. What we know about the set so far is that there are 338 cards in total, bringing all the set-defining cards and iconic mechanics from both Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation with a focus on the Limited play experience (Draft and Sealed), Pioneer, and continued support for Historic.
There a total of 464 cards combined in each of these expansions (269 Amonkhet and 199 for Hour of Devastation). While that means a many of our cards will make it into the set, the exact contents are unknown (though Gideon's Intervention has been pre-banned from Brawl in the ban announcement) and it even gets its own preview season starting August 10. The State of the Game article, however asked us to “keep an eye on these initiates as the Hour of Scheduled Maintenance draws nigh . . .”. Players have speculated that cards from Amonkhet Invocations could be included in the set, as a way to further introduce curated cards into Historic. This means that some powerful cards could make its way into Historic.
The update is now less than a week away, and MTG Arena has started to pre-patch the big update. User Kuru- from reddit has decided to have a peek at the files and found a list of cards which could potentially be in Amonkhet Remastered! You can view now also view all the cards at our card gallery.
I’ve included the rarities, in case some have been changed to re-balance limited. (Glorybringer is still at rare. Ugh.)
As some had speculated, some of the invocations are included. I noticed Thoughtseize and Wrath of God, but not, say, Dark Ritual. I couldn’t figure out how to list them separately from the rest of the set, so I guess someone will have to go through the list by hand.
I’m also noticing one of the non-AKH SDCC17 cards: Jace, Unraveler of Secrets. (I’m assuming they will use the SDCC art, but I didn’t check.) Chandra, however, seems like she’s getting her archenemy card instead. (Once again, I’m just assuming that that’s the art they’ll use, but I didn’t check.)
I’m only counting 304 cards, instead of the 338 advertised. I’ve removed tokens, basics and the separate halves of split cards (those are stored as three objects, e.g. “Dawn // Dusk”, “Dawn” and “Dusk”); maybe that accounts for the discrepancy. Or maybe I messed up somewhere.
Update: Here’s another list thanks to SystemicNightmare, sorted by collector number. This means that Regal Caracal is the “buy-a-box” promo that you get when you buy the 45 pack or 90 pack bundle, and 35 are Basic Lands, accounting for all 338 + 1 cards!
Will these format defining cards such as Thoughtseize and Collected Company actually make it into Historic? We will have to wait until the previews beginning on August 10 to confirm these findings! Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
