"Turn 0 Leylines, massive mana, and a Starfield of Nyx finish—this wild Historic brew is all about creativity and fun. Check out this week’s Honorable Mentions for a deck that swings big and thinks outside the box!"
Hello! Plum here with something different for you today. I brew a lot of jank, and I mean a lotof jank. And that means they can’t all be winners. Viewers of my stream know that we’ll get high on a deck idea just for us to go 0-5 on the ladder and move onto the next one. That’s just the way she goes sometimes. However, these articles, and the Jank Tank in general, were made to show off the good, the bad, and the ugly. My goal is to foster creativity within the deck building community and try to find and explore brews that are outside the box, both good and bad. As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is a another man’s treasure.” Our version of a deck might have not have been the greatest, but showing it off and explaining how it works might inspire someone else to build something better.
For example, do you guys remember the original decks that led to the bans of Eldrazi Winter? They were waaaaay different than the decks that got Eye of Ugin banned.
Now in this case, the early processor style lists were still quite strong, but they weren’t nearly as good as the what was played at the Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch shortly after. The early versions had to walk so that the later ones could run (and get banned).
And that’s exactly why we brew!
Here at Fun & Jank, it’s never just about finding the next Tier 1 powerhouse or chasing the meta. It’s about celebrating creativity, exploring the unexpected, and proving that Magic still has infinite room for uncharted ideas. Sure, winning is great—but isn’t it more fun when you win on your own terms, with a deck that feels uniquely yours?
Every brew we showcase, every wacky combo or underplayed archetype, is a reminder that Magic is a game of endless possibilities. Whether you’re here to watch me test out fresh ideas or just enjoy the ride, my goal is to inspire you to think outside the deck box and maybe even create something completely your own.
With that being said, I’d like to start talking about some honorable mentions. Decks that we brewed on stream, or that I tested myself, but gave up on. Many of them have interesting concepts or ideas that I think are worth showing off, but in their current state aren’t quite good enough to get consistent results. These articles won’t be as in depth as some of our other deck techs, but I promise they’ll be just as fun!
Leylines Gone Wild
For our first Honorable Mention, we’re playing a Historic deck I modeled after Legacy Leylines. (If you don’t know what that is, here’s a great deck tech from youtuber The Epic Storm.)
Now Historic is missing quite a lot of cards that makes the deck work in Legacy, but we were able to come up with something pretty close.
Part 1 – We want to keep a handful of Leylines that we can drop on turn 0 for free. Hopefully, they’re the same color (either all green or all white) to give us 4+ devotion for Nykthos.
Part 3 – Cast Starfield of Nyx to turn your Leylines into 4/4 creatures and swing at your opponent.
The Support
Lupine Prototype: If our game plan doesn’t really pan out, this guy is our Plan B (lol I know). Our hand is usually empty because we dropped our Leylines turn 0. So he’s essentially a two-mana 5/5 without a downside. (Goyf can go kick rocks.)
Guardian of New Benalia: Starfield has another line of text that lets you reanimate an enchantment during your upkeep. So if we happen to draw additional Leylines we don’t want to cast, or just want to dump our hand so Lupine Prototype can attack, she makes it easy to do so.
That’s it. That’s the whole deck. Drop your Leylines, then ramp into Starfield and swing. I had fellow article writer Code_Halcyon convince me to craft and play this list on stream until we got a win, which you can watch below.
WITNESS MEEEEEEEE (This was only our 4th game)
Closing Thoughts
I’m not here to redefine the meta and break the format-I’m here to remind you that Magic is supposed to be fun. While the competitive meta has its place, there’s something truly special about crafting a brew that reflects your personality and style. It’s not always about winning the most games—it’s about winning your way, with decks that make you smile and leave your opponents scratching their heads. Brewing isn’t just about the decks; it’s about the stories you create, the bold ideas you test, and the joy of finding hidden gems in the card pool. Keep experimenting, keep innovating, and above all, keep having fun. Who knows? Your next crazy idea might just be the one to take your opponents—and the meta—by storm (see what I did there? storm…? get it..?)
Thanks for reading.
As always feel free to comment and leave any questions you have below! Make sure to come back next week for even more Fun & Jank!
If you want to see these decks in action, come hang out with me on stream where we test, refine, and have a ton of fun together!
Happy Brewing!
