Building a Sealed Deck

The first thing you want to do is identify your key cards. These are your bombs, mythic uncommons, premium rares, and high-end removal spells. They are the cards most likely to have a major impact on the game. These cards help determine your overall game plan, whether that’s winning through raw power, playing a controlling strategy, or trying to pressure your opponent with an aggressive curve. An honest evaluation of your pool will give you the best idea of which approach is most realistic.

Once you’ve determined what your pool is capable of supporting, look at your mana fixing. This will tell you whether splashing additional colors is practical or if you’re better off sticking to a more streamlined build. In Secrets of Strixhaven, five-color soup is one of the strongest strategies available, so cards like Potioner’s Trove and Terramorphic Expanse become especially valuable for enabling those greedy mana bases.

Next, sort your cards by color. As you do, separate them into three groups: cards you’re happy to play, cards you’ll play if needed, and cards you’d rather leave in the sideboard. Keep your intended game plan in mind while making these evaluations. If the colors that best support your bombs don’t have enough playable cards, don’t be afraid to reconsider your original plan.

At this point, you should have a clear idea of your strongest colors and which ones are better suited as splashes. Start building different color combinations and look for weaknesses in areas such as mana curve, removal, and win conditions. Compare your options until you find the build that gives you the best balance of power and consistency.

Once you’ve settled on the right configuration, all that’s left is building the mana baseโ€”and then you’re ready to run the table. (I’d say to win those sweet, sweet packs, but this is MWM so you’re going to have to settle for a couple of rares and a cosmetic. It is free limited though, so you can’t really complain too much.)
