Hey everyone! Some weeks I have to spend a lot of time theorycrafting, deck building, testing, and writing these articles. This is not one of those weeks. We’re running back Momir, which is WotC’s way of saying they didn’t feel like coming up with a gimmick for the week.
As Forrest Gump’s mom said, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.” That’s probably the best possible way to explain this week’s Momir event. Some people love it, while others think it represents everything that’s ever gone wrong with Magic.
The best way to enjoy Momir is to crank the randomness dial up to eleven and just embrace the chaos. It’s a fun way to relax and play some Magic without taking things too seriously. Personally, I find a small dose of it pretty entertaining, but it would definitely overstay its welcome if it stuck around for more than a few days at a time.
Momir itself is incredibly simple. Your entire deck consists of basic lands, and you have an emblem that lets you pay X mana and discard a card to create a random creature with that mana value.
That’s it.
There really isn’t much strategy involved, but there are still a few things you can do to slightly improve your odds. I’ll go over those after we knock out the event info.
Event Details
Use the emblem, discard a card, and pay X to create a token copy of a random creature card with mana value X. Every turn is a surprise!
You can check out the upcoming Midweek Magic schedule here.
Duration: September 8th, 2026 @ 2:00 PM PST to September 10th, 2026 @ 2:00 PM PST
Format: Momir
Entry Fee: Free
Ends After: You can play as much as you like for the duration of the event.
The general consensus is that eight is the magic number you want to reach and continue making creatures at. Without hitting any mana ramp or card draw, that means you should start using the emblem on turn three if youโre on the play and turn two if youโre on the draw.
Combat math can be especially important here. You donโt have to worry about any tricks that arenโt already on the battlefield since the decks contain nothing but lands. Take your time and figure out your attacks and blocks.
Since everything created by the emblem is a token, something like Hoverguard Sweepers can cause a massive swing by essentially killing your opponentโs two best creatures. Anything that provides a bonus to tokens is also at a premium. There are even plenty of creatures that might make your opponent scoop on the spot, such as Platinum Angel or Sundering Titan.
Obviously, thereโs a lot of luck involved. Any form of early ramp can put you far ahead of your opponent, but most games ultimately come down to who hits the best creatures on those late-game rolls.
Wrap Up
Thanks for reading! Iโll be back soon to talk about the next Midweek Magic, which is The Hobbit Quick Draft.
I may have buried the lead a little bit, though, because Iโll also be handling the Limited reviews for Reality Fracture. So thereโs going to be plenty of Magic rambling coming your way very soon.
Until then, stay classy, people!
