MTG: Arena Announcements, December 1, 2021

Once a week, Wizards of the Coast provides the MTG Arena community with an update on all of the latest happenings with the digital client through an announcement bulletin posted on their official page. This week’s announcements were brief, but Wizards teased that tomorrow, a new State of the Game will be released – and it will contain some major news.

In this article, you’ll find a brief summary of all of the information from this week’s bulletin. You can also find the full text of the original post from Wizards at the bottom of the page. Let’s get started.

Update Redeployment and Continued Bugfixing

In last week’s announcements, Wizards detailed how the update that was originally deployed on Friday, November 19 caused client problems that were significant enough that the update had to be fully rolled back. On Monday of this week (11/29), the update was redeployed; however, there were still outstanding problems that required several events to be temporarily disabled. The affected events were Wedding Crashers, Jump In! and Midweek Magic.

This morning, the MTG Arena client went down for a couple hours once again to fix the last of the problems and re-enable the three events. As of the writing of this article in the afternoon of December 1, the client is back online and the events are functional. Wizards says that any players who joined events during the problematic period will have their entry fees reimbursed.

Reminder: The (Draft!) Arena Open Takes Place this Weekend, 12/4-5

The Arena Open in-client tournament series returns this weekend, this time featuring the draft format for the first time. Day one competition will include both best-of-one and best-of-three play, but competitors who make it to day two will be competing in best-of-three only. You can find more information about the Arena Open in last week’s announcements, as well as over on Wizard’s official page for the event.

Interestingly, Wizards made no mention in the announcements of the Innistrad Championship, the first event of the 2021-22 pro season, that will also be taking place this weekend featuring both the Standard and Historic formats.

State of the Game Coming Tomorrow

Every so often (the interval isn’t always regular), Wizards puts out a State of the Game article concerning MTG Arena. The State of the Game goes into more detail about upcoming news and changes to Arena than the usual weekly announcements, and they typically aren’t published unless there’s some kind of major change coming to Arena – often, the State of the Game comes along with the release a new set.

In today’s bulletin, Wizards has announced that a State of the Game publication will follow tomorrow on Thursday, December 2. We don’t know much about what the “big news” will be, other than that it will include “important info covering December 9’s release.” No word yet on what exactly will be happening on December 9, but we’ll keep you posted tomorrow when the State of the Game is released.

Wizards also says that additional details will follow the State of the Game on MTG’s official Twitch stream starting at 2:30 pm Pacific Time.

Wrapping Up

That covers everything from this week’s announcements brief. Be sure not to forget about the “big news” coming in the State of the Game – we’ll be back again tomorrow with full details for your convenience, so stay tuned. In the meantime, you can find the full text of today’s announcements below, which includes an up-to-date schedule of events as well as details on the new December Ranked Season.

MTG Arena Announcements, December 1, 2021

Downtime: December 1, 7–11 a.m. PT

There is a downtime this morning, December 1, scheduled from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. PT (15:00–19:00 UTC).

Release Redeployment

On Monday, we redeployed the release that was reverted on Friday, November 19. This also included fixes for issues that occurred after that initial deployment. Unfortunately, another issue occurred that impacted Wedding Crashers, Jump In!, and Midweek Magic, requiring us to disable these events. That issue will be resolved during the December 1 downtime, after which all three events will be turned back on. Players who joined the events during the affected period will be automatically reimbursed.

Arena Open Draft This Weekend

Arena Open returns this weekend, December 4–5, featuring both Best-of-One and Traditional Best-of-Three Draft matches on Day 1 (Saturday, December 4). Earn an invitation token during Day 1 to enter Day 2’s high-stakes Traditional (Best-of-Three) Player Draft (December 5).
