Kavus! I come bearing great news, for all Brawl lovers in MTG Arena constructed format, build your own 100 cards and include one legendary creature, planeswalker, Vehicle, or Spacecraft as your commander, the same as EDH Commander but in MTG Arena, Brawl is a format that has been here for quite awhile, today we got some exciting news that Ranked Brawl is coming June 23rd, a more high stakes meta challenge is ahead for us.
Featuring a commander legendary to lead a theme, strategy or pure flavor in your deck, Brawl is a singleton constructed format, now to be Ranked the stakes raised once more to get in more competitive shape, but where to start?
Here’s some top contenders already seen on the MTGArena Brawl Meta, as MTG Arena stands in a more controlled environment than their TCG counterpart, for Ranked Brawl, Banlist applies:
Playing Brawl lets you use the commander zone where you can cast your commander as its type card speed, and paying commander tax of 2 colorless of each time it has been cast before let’s take for example Sigarda, Host of Herons you play her at sorcery speed on your turn by 2 colorless 1 green 2 white mana the first time, and next turn a board wipe is played and she returns to the command zone, on your next turn you can cast her by the same 5 mana and additional 2 colorless mana totalling 7 mana, and next time to be cast 9, and so on.
So now as the meta goes for Brawl these are the usual contenders in matchups:
The big deal to fight against Mythweaver Poq is that it is able to guarantee it’s next cast, it has base power and toughness based on number of lands, and whenever another land enters the battlefield, conjures a duplicate of that land, what Mythweaver intends to do is have too much mana, and overwhelm with tons of card being played, first appearance of Poq on play opponents tends to throw removals, but it only gets worse as subsequent turns Poq is still being played by 6, 8, 10 mana, while still conjuring duplicates of lands, delaying the inevitable, conjured lands still trigger your typical Landfall effects.
Another recent runner up is Sephiroth, Fabled Soldier, kinda the aristocrat strategy, this deck wants to bring cannon fodder to trigger Sephiroth effects slowly pinging the opponent to death, Starscape Cleric is able to duplicate this effect as it syphons the opponent based on life gain.
Blue is no stranger to brawl you would think in singleton formats Blue doesn’t have the same consistency but is definitely the ruler of control, Eluge, The shoreless Sea, this gigantic monster wants to attack and flood islands in order to cheapen spells per flood island, Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim a big hitter for that efficiency drawing cards, Haughty Djinn for that early cheap spell, will get those pesky fights on the stack going Negate, Spell Stutter.
The dawn for brawl enthusiast is here, let’s roll into the Brawl highstakes and rank up the ladder, there’s a lot to be doing now into theorycrafting the upcoming Meta for Brawl, singleton format that let cards that wouldn’t be used in other scenarios to shine here, old card or either the Brawl Standard format is also a good place to start.
