Hey everyone! Our time together will be relatively short this week because there aren’t any decks for me to build. Personally I love whenever we get these free drafts because limited is my favorite format and it gives everyone an opportunity to at least try it out. These wonky formats are also a nice change of pace for those of us who are already a billion drafts deep into the format.
This weekโs MWM is Secrets of Strixhaven Cascade Draft. While it is obviously a Secrets of Strixhaven draft, I can only speculate on what the cascade part is. I’m guessing that it means that your first spell each turn uses the cascade mechanic.
For those of you who don’t know what cascade is or would like a quick refresher: Cascadeย (When you cast this spell, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card that costs less. You may cast it without paying its mana cost. Put the exiled cards on the bottom in a random order.)
I’ll give you a few tips and tricks after the event info and then you can go ahead and get out of here.
Event Details
Draft a 40 card deck from Secrets of Strixhaven. The first spell you cast each turn allows you to cascade.

Format: Secrets of Strixhaven Cascade Draft
Entry Fee: Free
Ends After: You can play as much as you like for the duration of the event.
Cascade doesn’t play well with interactive spells. While you will usually still have a target for removal, counterspells are pretty terrible.
Since you’re getting extra spells, it sure would be nice if there was a mechanic based around every time you target a creature with a spell. Silverquill is already a great deck in SoS draft, but it could be absurd here.
Keep in mind that a lot of SoS triggers come from spending five mana on a spell. Its important to note that it’s not casting a spell with a mana value of five or above. That means that you won’t get that extra bonus off of a cascade.
While this seems basic, sequencing is really important here. You don’t want to waste your cascade on a one mana spell that won’t hit anything in your deck. You normally want to play your more expensive cards first to get that value.
Wrap Up
Thanks for reading! Iโll be back next week with your next look at MWM. Until then, stay classy people!
