Ladies, Gentlemen, and Bat Lemur Allies welcome to another round of spoilers for our favorite Avatar joining in MTG form, today let’s look at the more recent previews cooked from our friends at WotC
Avatar The Last Airbender Spoilers
We are starting off with Zhao, the Moon Slayer doubling down as a blood moon kind of effect on creature form, makes nonbasic lands enter tapped and when you put a conqueror counter on him it activates the full blood moon effect, making him perfect lore effect, he might end up as a sideboard creature against plenty of multicolored decks across formats.
Kyoshi Battle Fan this equipment creates a creature ally, reminds me of the living weapon back in Scars of Mirrodin cycle, simple equipment card.
The Legend of Kyoshi is here, the avatar Kyoshi in saga form a perfect match to the earthbending archetype protecting lands and giving them trample, and also a big mana source of at least adding 5 mana from her own power alone.
Joo Dee, One of Many a two mana drop, that is able to replicate itself for 1 black mana and sacrificing a creature, not so good, but not bad.
Ba Sing Se, the mythical protected city of Ba Sing Se continuing the cycle of mono colored landmarks in the Avatar world, this card has an Earthbend 2 for 3 mana, perfectly in balance with the current cycle of lands.
Now for the The Walls of Ba Sing Se, a 0/30 defender makes Doran, The siege tower drool of its potential or maybe even Arcades, The Strategist but not only the high toughness but making your permanents indestructible is a great effect, I-ll definitely see it in play being cast early on mid game.
Earthen Ally one mana drop, cheeky little fella with possibilities at hand on the late game by making an earthbend 5 for 7 mana and not to mention the mana fixing required for the 5 color cost, but leaving that aside this card is meant to grow through the game an get beefier lets see what people come up with this card.
Airbender's Reversal this is a great removal spell against Screaming Nemesis once it attacks is removed without dealing damage and not triggering its ability, or even protect your own creatures by airbending them.
Even more Spoilers
Hermitic Herbalist in my book is a great mana dork, either gives you comfortably the mana you need, or a combination of two manas for lesson spells only, I like this card a lot!
Obsessive Pursuit will ping you for 1 every turn but will churn out clue tokens and lets you buff creatures with +1/+1 counters based on how many permanents you have sacrificed that turn, and beyond three sacrifices that creature gains lifelink.
Crashing Wave is a great stun spell but only at sorcery speed, which means in your turn you’ll tap either your mana or your creatures to stun the other side of the board, it depends on the board state.
Messanger Hawk a great Dimir colored option for clue generation and also great attrition to deal 3 damage on attacks and drawing cards, I really like this game design as it makes things simple to elaborate for draw and getting buffs on attacks.
Walltop Sentries another balanced common creature 3 CMC 2/3 Reach, Deathtouch, and when this creature dies and a lesson is in your graveyard you’ll gain 2 life
Rockalanche Earthbend X, equal to the number of forests you control, and with a flashback option, not so good, not bad.
Swampsnare Trap -5/-3 quite the heavy removal spell or debuff creature type, and the option to cheap 1 mana out if the target is a flying creature.
Foggy Swamp Hunters 3/4 for 4 CMC as long you’ve drawn two or more cards this turn, this creature gains lifelink and menace. could be good on a clue archetype.
Knowledge Seeker viligance fox 2/1 for 2 CMC and when you have drawn your second card each turn put a +1/+1 counter on it, and when it dies generate a clue token, really good card if you ask me, able to grow up into a threat and create a clue token upon death.
Benevolent River Spirit cheaply CMC for a 4/5 flying, ward 2, but with the downside of the additional cost of waterbend 5.
Kyoshi Warriors 3/3 for 4 CMC that creates a 1/1 ally token. so in paper all the value is there, but I don’t think it’ll see much play.
Invasion Reinforcements a 2 mana drop 1/1 that creates an ally token, we already had cards like this in the past but is really good to see the ally subtype present.
Great Divide Guide is a really good mana dork, in the ally archetype it brings so many options to the table, and for general mana fixing purposes is great!
Wrapping up
Now that we are on the last rounds of the spoiler season for Avatar The Last Airbender, some really good cards for standard, but I am still wondering why so much efforts into the clue generation cards. reminds me of the food and blood archetypes not so long ago, and nowadays we have plenty of treasure and maps tokens. anyways glad you read this all the way through, and remember counterspells are bad for your health, stay safe, until the next one, code is out!
