Momir – Midweek Magic Event Guide

This guide will contain everything you need to know about the Midweek Magic: Momir event, including rewards.

Hey everyone! As Forrest Gump’s mom said, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.” That’s probably the best way to explain this week’s Momir event. Some people love it, while others think it’s everything that’s ever gone wrong with Magic.

The best way to describe it is that you’ll have a great time as long as you don’t mind turning the randomness dial up to eleven. It’s a fun way to relax and not take Magic too seriously for a bit. Personally, I find a small dose of it pretty entertaining, but it would definitely overstay its welcome if it stuck around for more than a few days at a time.

Momir is very simple. Your entire deck consists of basic lands, and you have an emblem that lets you pay X mana and discard a card to create a random creature with that mana value. There really isn’t much strategy involved, but I’ll go over what little there is after some event info.

Event Details

Use the emblem, discard a card, and pay X to create a token copy of a random creature card with mana value X. Every turn is a surprise!

General Strategy

The general consensus is that eight is the magic number you want to reach and continue making creatures at. Without hitting any mana ramp or card draw, that means you should start using the emblem on turn three if youโ€™re on the play and turn two if youโ€™re on the draw.

Combat math can be especially important here. You donโ€™t have to worry about any tricks that arenโ€™t already on the battlefield since the decks contain nothing but lands. Take your time and figure out your attacks and blocks.

Since everything created by the emblem is a token, something like Hoverguard Sweepers can cause a massive swing by essentially killing your opponentโ€™s two best creatures. Anything that provides a bonus to tokens is also at a premium. There are even plenty of creatures that might make your opponent scoop on the spot, such as Platinum Angel or Sundering Titan.

On the other hand, sometimes you hit Demonlord Belzenlok and immediately deck yourself or Phage the Untouchable and straight-up lose the game on the spot.

Obviously, thereโ€™s a lot of luck involved. Any form of early ramp can put you far ahead of your opponent, but most games ultimately come down to who hits the best creatures on those late-game rolls.

Wrap Up

Thanks for reading! Iโ€™ll be back soon to talk about the next Midweek Magic. Until then, stay classy people!
