MTG: Arena Announcements, March 2, 2022

Another Wednesday means another new announcements blog from Wizards of the Coast regarding MTG Arena. This week’s post is packed with important dates, and Wizards has also announced two new events that will be taking place on Arena throughout the month of March.

Just as the Neon Arcade event that was announced last week will be offering Neon Dynasty’s “soft glow” cardstyles as rewards, The Unbroken Blade event will offer the chance to unlock the special showcase Samurai card styles, while the Out of the Shadows event will offer Ninja styles.

We’ll be covering the details of both of these events, along with a couple of reminders from Wizards and a few other important dates, in our quick-and-dirty summary below. You’ll also find the full text of Wizard’s original post embedded at the bottom of the page.

Streets of New Capenna Launches Next Month

It feels like just yesterday that the latest MTG set, Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, was released on Arena, but Wizards is already teasing us with news and a release date for the next set. Wizards made headlines last week by announcing that they would be changing up the usual paradigm of the set’s release: instead of the set launching on Magic’s digital platforms first, the first opportunity to play with Streets of New Capenna will be the prerelease weekend happening about a week in advance.

You can read up on the details of the change in our coverage embedded above, but in today’s announcements, Wizards included a reminder that the mobster-themed set will be coming to MTG Arena on April 28.

Reminders: Neon Arcade and the Neon Dynasty Championship

Wizards also reminds us that Magic’s next major competitive event, the Neon Dynasty Championship, will be taking place on March 11-13. This time, the Championship will feature seven Swiss rounds of Alchemy and eight rounds of Historic followed by a double-elimination Alchemy playoff on Sunday. Official coverage of the event will be hosted as usual on twitch.tv/magic.

Additionally, Wizards also reiterated details of the Neon Arcade event which will be launching on the client this Friday, March 4. The Neon Arcade will feature Alchemy Singleton and will include a special High Score emblem. The event will reward “soft glow” showcase card styles from Neon Dynasty. You’ll find the full details of the event over on last week’s announcements.

New Event: The Unbroken Blade, March 18-25

Next up is the pair of events that will be any player’s path to unlocking the Samurai and Ninja showcase frames on MTG Arena. The first event, dubbed The Unbroken Blade, will also feature Alchemy Singleton with a special emblem. For this event, the “Studying the Blade” emblem will be active for both players, and it reads: “Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, you may pay 1 life. If you do, put a +1/+1 counter on that creature. Otherwise, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn.”

The emblem is meant to encourage players to make use of Neon Dynasty’s Samurai abilities that buff a creature when it attacks alone. The event will cost 2,000 gold or 400 gems to enter, and each entry will allow players to participate until they reach 4 wins or 2 losses in best-of-one. The reward structure for the event is as follows:

WinsRewards
4 wins2,500 gold + 3 card styles
3 wins1,500 gold + 3 card styles
2 wins1,000 gold + 2 card styles
1 win500 gold + 2 card styles
0 win1 card style

We’ve covered all the important stuff here, but you can also check out Wizards’ official page for the event which includes a full list of possible card style rewards.

New Event: Out of the Shadows, March 25-April 1

Finally, the Out of the Shadows event will be launching right after The Unbroken Blade ends on March 25, running until April 1. The structure of the event will be much the same: Alchemy Singleton with a special emblem, 2k gold or 400 gems to enter, and play until 4 wins or 2 losses in best-of-one. The emblem for Out of the Shadows has the text: “Whenever one or more creatures you control deal combat damage to a player, a random creature card in your hand perpetually gets +1/+1. Until your next turn, you may cast creature spells as though they had flash.”

The card styles being offered as rewards for Out of the Shadows are the Ninja showcase frames from Neon Dynasty; you’ll find the full list over on the Out of the Shadows event page. As for the reward structure, it’s identical to The Unbroken Blade event’s rewards listed above:

WinsRewards
4 wins2,500 gold + 3 card styles
3 wins1,500 gold + 3 card styles
2 wins1,000 gold + 2 card styles
1 win500 gold + 2 card styles
0 win1 card style

And that brings us to the end of our coverage of the MTG Arena Announcements for this week. While we’ve covered the main points above, you’ll find the full blog post from Wizards embedded below, including an up-to-date schedule of Arena events and the details of the March ranked season rewards.
