Dear ladies, gentlemen and kavus, we are long due for another MTG top 8 analysis standard Metagame this time is Big Magic Japan held on 05-09-2026, Standard constructed sanctioned event featuring 352 players, let’s take a look at the top 8 performers of today’s list.
5th-8th Standing
Selesnya Aggro – Ma Noah
Big time Selesnya contenders reaffirming their power into the metagame with Brightglass gearhulk and Ouroboroid, the gearhulk fetches and plays everything you need with 1 CMC into play, either pawpatch recruit for more power ups, Seam Rip for removal, badgermole cub for more mana production, and the big Ouroboros themed planet sized wurm plant is for getting a big steady power ups for bigger creatures on the battlefield. Meltstrider's Resolve is brought for some fighting options which clears blockers for better attacks, this is an impressively consistent an early deck.
Our first Izzet archetype powered by more Secrets of Strixhaven cards Prismari Charm, Traumatic Critique let’s you get into the top 2 cards while discarding one card, while also dealing damage to one target creature.
This deck specializes on using elementals Hearth Elemental, Sunderflock bouncing back creatures from your opponents side and leaving a clear way for attacks, this deck has every spell necessary for winning, Sleight of Hand for some early draw option, Spellsnare, Spell Pierce, Three Steps Ahead counterspells forces to diminish the opponent casting efforts, the real hero is Eddymurk Crab gets lower casting options by instant and sorcery and taps and stun creatures, and the Sunderflocks hits really by the Eddymurk in play, so every effor the opponent does into not drowning in stun and bounce effects will open up the opportunity to win.
This deck won’t impose shackles directly into their opponents but what it wants to achieve is to slowly disarm their threats while growing their own strategies.
This deck specializes into controlling the game until it’s casting time for Jeskai Revelation this spell will return either a spell or permanent to its owner hand deal 4 damage to any target and create two Prowess monks 1/1 at first it might not seem much, but paired with the amount of shock spells and counterspells this deck has, it’s just too much control to overcome and come up with the upper hand, at the second resolution of the Revelation you will end up with 4 monks 1/1 and the idea is to keep spellslinging during attacks until the the opponent realizes there’s nothing much to be done as their board state will either bounce back to hand or dies by lightning.
Another Elemental oriented deck Izzet archetype, the big fellas are Hearth Elemental, Eddymurk Crab, Sunderflock, this version of this deck focus on more lightning hate into destroying things by shock damage rather than fighting the stack with counterspells, as these spells might turn into the opponent losing life.
Another runnerup with Jeskai Revelation theme into play, Broadside Barrage is a very important spell, that by 3 CMC let’s you deal 5 damage mostly eliminating every threat in standard, and even with reanimator in mind as Ardyn brings them as 5/5 creatures while also letting you draw and discard a card.
The main idea remains the same turtle the match making your opponent waste their efforts as you control the match and obliterate the table and when the time is right the consequent cast of Jeskai Revelation will populate the table with 1/1 tokens with prowess while also dealing 4 damage to any target and bouncing back threats.
The final rendition to Jeskai Revelation with more color present, the big difference here is the Inevitable Defeat an anticounter spell, that exiles another permanent and drains the opponent 3 life points and gain 3 life points, the new Erode to remove pesky creatures, Consult the Star Charts to further enter the deck and look for that card that you are missing to keep turtling the match.
Wrapping up we still have a blue oriented meta with plenty of options of card fixing draw and discard effects still in place, and the latest Secrets of Strixhaven bringing a more unified Izzet brews with both shocks and draw effects in the same cards without feeling too much overpowered, while Ouroboroid grews more confident still since its inclusion in edge of eternities, splashing blue is still the formula for success despite how fast and efficient Selesnya is turning up to be.
Stay away from counterspells kids, they are bad for your health, until the next one Code is out!
