When Every Card is a Threat-Selesnya Landfall in Standard

The MTG Hero breaks down Selesnya Landfall with the new upgrade of Jennifer Walters, aka The Sensational She-Hulk! Get ready to Smash opponents with this build!

Hello, my fellow Planeswalkers! I am The MTG Hero and if you’ve played Standard over the past several months, chances are you’ve already faced Selesnya Landfall. The deck has consistently been one of the format’s premier aggressive strategies, putting up strong results by doing what it does best by turning every creature into a must-answer threat.

Today, we’re taking a closer look at the archetype, including its newest addition: Jennifer Walters, who transforms into ”The.
Landfall in Standard

Landfall in Standard

Right now, Standard has two major Landfall archetypes.

The first is Mono-Green Landfall, which plays more like a combo deck. It leans heavily on chaining multiple Landfall triggers with Icetill Explorer and Mightform Harmonizer to assemble one massive, game-ending attack.

The second is Selesnya Landfall.

Unlike its mono-green counterpart, Selesnya is more of a midrange strategy. It has stronger interaction, larger standalone threats, and doesn’t rely as heavily on assembling a perfect combo. That said, thanks to Mightform Harmonizer and the recently adopted Practiced Offense, the deck is still capable of producing explosive kills seemingly out of nowhere.

This is the version of Selesnya Landfall I’m currently playing.

We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel here. The archetype is already well established, but I have made a few card choices that differ from the stock lists you’ll commonly see. I’ll explain those decisions as we go.

The deck begins with your choice of Llanowar Elves or Sazh's Chocobo.

If you have both, which one you lead with depends on the matchup and the rest of your hand. Going in blind, I generally prefer leading with Sazh's Chocobo so it can immediately begin accumulating +1/+1 counters. On turn two, you can crack a fetch land and still cast Llanowar Elves, giving you both early pressure and acceleration.

Next comes one of the biggest non-Izzet pillars of Standard: Badgermole Cub.

The Cub is phenomenal because it provides two bodies for a single card while ramping you far ahead of curve. Combined with an early Llanowar Elves, it creates some incredibly explosive openings.

Earthbender Ascension is the glue that holds every Landfall deck together.

It tutors up a land while simultaneously animating another into a creature, meaning it immediately impacts the battlefield. Better yet, if you already control Badgermole Cub, the animated land provides even more mana acceleration, allowing you to snowball ahead of your opponent.

The Heavy Hitters

Once the early game is established, it’s time to start presenting threats your opponent simply can’t ignore.

Mightform Harmonizer turns any creature in our deck into a win condition with just a single fetch land. So many of our bigger cards or even itself can be come 16-20 powered behemoths by doubling their power twice. If Ascension is the glue of Landfall decks, Harmonizer is the heart and soul. I can’t imagine builds without it.

Leatherhead, Swamp Stalker is one of the best four-drops in Standard. A 5/5 with trample and hexproof already demands an answer, but pairing it with Mightform Harmonizer and a fetch land often represents 20 damage on the spot.

Few decks can survive that sequence, which is exactly why I’ve chosen to play three copies.

Surrak, Elusive Hunter continues to be one of the strongest utility creatures in the format. He punishes one-for-one removal by replacing your creatures with additional cards, making it much harder for control and midrange decks to trade efficiently.

Meanwhile, Dyadrine, Synthesis Amalgam serves as an incredible mana sink while also providing card advantage. More importantly, it gives the deck a legitimate “go wide” backup plan by turning all those accumulated counters into an army of creatures. Between animated lands and Earthbender Ascension, enabling Dyadrine is surprisingly easy.

The Marvel Upgrade

The Marvel Super Heroes set gave Selesnya Landfall exactly what it wanted in Jennifer Walters.

At first glance, she resembles Voice of Victory, but she’s considerably stronger in this shell. Jennifer functions as an early creature, a late-game mana sink, and eventually transforms into The Sensational She-Hulk.

Once transformed, She-Hulk becomes another enormous trampling threat that combines beautifully with Mightform Harmonizer and a fetch land to create yet another one-turn kill.

Her passive ability also makes combat miserable for your opponent, reflecting damage your creatures take back at them and making profitable blocks nearly impossible.

Non-Creature Spells

Practiced Offense seemingly came out of nowhere to become a Standard staple, and it’s easy to see why.

Giving one of your oversized creatures double strike ends games immediately. I’ve already mentioned several sequences involving Mightform Harmonizer and fetch lands, but Practiced Offense makes those lethal attacks even easier to assemble. Sometimes all you need is a single Landfall trigger.

The card also supports your backup go-wide strategy, allowing your entire board to become an overwhelming combat step.

I’m also playing two copies of Erode.

If I had more room, I’d happily play additional copies, but two has felt like the right number. Having instant-speed interaction for threats like Ouroboroid before they spiral out of control is incredibly valuable.

Sideboard

Meltstrider's Resolve is excellent creature interaction while also preventing opponents from double- or triple-blocking your oversized attackers. That effect is especially important in the mirror.

Restoration Magic is my protection spell of choice. While many players prefer Royal Treatment or Snakeskin Veil, I value the modal flexibility and the ability to protect my entire board from sweepers like Day of Judgment.

For graveyard hate, I’m currently running Rest in Peace. Soul-Guide Lantern is also a perfectly reasonable option, especially if your list includes Icetill Explorer.

Sheltered by Ghosts shines against aggressive decks, removing problematic creatures while giving your massive threats lifelink to completely swing races.

Torpor Orb is almost mandatory for green decks right now. It shuts down Sunderflock strategies while also pulling plenty of weight against Loki Blink and various Reanimator decks.

Finally, Mossborn Hydra is a fantastic threat against Mono-Green. Left unchecked, it ends the game in just a few turns. Since it’s an Elemental, it also lines up extremely well against Sunderflock, avoiding many of the bounce effects those decks rely on.

Wrap-Up

Selesnya Landfall has been one of Standard’s best decks for months, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. The archetype combines explosive starts, resilient threats, and surprising finishing power, making it a nightmare for unprepared opponents.

The addition of Jennifer Walters gives the deck another angle of attack without sacrificing consistency. She fits naturally into the strategy while adding even more explosive kills once she transforms into She-Hulk.

If you’re looking for a proactive deck that rewards tight sequencing while still delivering some of the most devastating combat phases in Standard, Selesnya Landfall should absolutely be on your radar. It remains one of the format’s premier aggressive strategies and now it’s stronger than ever.

Until next time Planeswalkers, Hero out!
