Hello, my fellow Planeswalkers! I am The MTG Hero, and I am proud to bring you a deck that completely caught me off guard. It amazed me with just how efficient and powerful it is.
Older players might remember the Esper Bounce decks that dominated Standard over a year ago, eventually becoming so powerful that Wizards of the Coast had to step in and ban several key cards to bring the archetype back in line.
While Loki has already started showing up as a build-around card in Modern and Legacy brews, this Standard shell proves he doesn’t need an entire deck built around him. Instead, he slots perfectly into Esper Bounce, giving the archetype another threat capable of overwhelming opponents through repeated value.
Let’s dive into why this has become one of my favorite decks to battle with in the current Standard format.
Loki doesn’t ask you to build your entire deck around him.
Instead, he rewards you for doing what the deck already wants to do.
Every turn you’re casting cheap permanents.
You’re replaying enchantments.
You’re bouncing creatures.
You’re forcing awkward combat.
You’re slowly grinding your opponent out of resources.
Loki simply multiplies that advantage.
Unlike traditional finishers that demand immediate protection, Loki naturally snowballs over several turns. Opponents often can’t afford to ignore him, yet removing him usually means they’re falling behind on everything else you’re doing.
That’s exactly the kind of threat this strategy wanted.
Picking up Stormchaser's Talent with Boomerang Basics is already a staple line of play in the current metagame, generating an incredible amount of value through extra bodies and card draw.
It’s easy to see how powerful the deck becomes when you’re casting Boomerang Basics to return something like Nowhere to Run, replaying it to remove another creature while drawing another card.
The interaction between Nurturing Pixie, Sunpearl Kirin, and your collection of inexpensive permanents fits perfectly into this game plan. Once Loki joins the battlefield, those bounce effects begin generating even more card advantage, allowing you to draw while continuing to develop your board.
That’s an incredible amount of virtual card advantage for such a small mana investment.
When combined with Nowhere to Run, Grim Bauble, and Tinybones Joins Up, the deck gains access to repeatable removal and discard effects that quickly overwhelm slower opponents.
Multiple value engines on the battlefield become incredibly difficult for midrange decks to keep up with.
Building With Loki
There is one important thing to remember when building around Loki.
He only draws cards from abilities that target players or permanents.
That means Boomerang Basics itself won’t trigger Loki’s draw ability. However, your white bounce creatures do, as do permanents like Nowhere to Run when they target opposing creatures, along with Tinybones Joins Up.
At the same time, you don’t want to overcommit to Loki.
The deck still needs strong interaction that functions independently of him while maintaining its powerful bounce engine.
This is also why cards like Aang, Swift Savior and Floodpits Drowner make the cut. They may not answer everything, but they synergize well with both Loki and the bounce package while buying enough time for your engine to take over the game.
How to Play the Deck
The opening turns are all about establishing your engine.
Against aggressive decks, don’t be afraid to use your removal early.
Your late game is significantly stronger than theirs, so surviving the opening turns is often all that matters.
Against midrange decks, patience is key.
There’s rarely a reason to overextend into sweepers. Instead, continue replaying permanents, accumulating value, and forcing your opponent into unfavorable exchanges.
Control presents a different challenge.
Here, Loki becomes one of your best threats. He demands an immediate answer while your inexpensive permanents continue slipping underneath counterspells.
The longer the game goes, the harder it becomes for control decks to answer everything.
The reason I am playing Bat over Duress, is due to how the Izzet decks function. Why would I want to help them discard and load up their graveyard so they can ramp out elementals or get the lesson count up for Accumulated Wisdom?
It is just a pet theory, but I think Bat might be a better option in this deck because it is repeatable with bounce effects. Sure they might get the card back temporarily, but if it is still the most dangerous card, I will take it again. If I have a removal spell exiled and they have mana open to punish my bounce on Bat then I won’t so it. Simple.
Bat also has synergy with Loki as it is a permanent, targeting a player. So it is worth testing and has been good so far.
Kaito, Bane of Nightmares is a great card to shut down midrange decks. Surviving sweepers, being a solid creature with hexproof and drawing cards is exactly what I want. His tap down effect also draws off Loki.
Tishana's Tidebinder is an awesome effect to shut down problematic effects like “card name=”Ouroboroid”]. Sunderflock, Tablet of Discovery and any problematic Planeswalkers. The usefulness of this card is endless.
Standard has become increasingly focused on grinding incremental value.
Everyone is trying to trade resources efficiently.
Esper Loki Bounce simply plays that game better than most opponents.
Instead of drawing one extra card each turn, you’re effectively replaying multiple permanents throughout the game.
Instead of relying on expensive finishers, you’re generating dozens of small advantages that eventually become impossible to overcome.
These kinds of decks have historically been difficult to attack because every card contributes to the overall engine.
Remove one threat.
Another takes its place.
Kill a creature.
It gets bounced and replayed.
Answer an enchantment.
Another copy immediately follows.
That’s exactly how value decks win tournaments.
Wrap-Up
In my opinion, this is the best home for Loki, God of Mischief in Standard and it is a blast to play. Honestly, one of my favorite decks to just play and chill.
Rather than trying to build an entire strategy around one mythic, this deck lets Loki enhance an already proven shell filled with efficient creatures, recursive value, and some of the best low-cost interaction in the format.
Every game feels different because your decisions matter. Sequencing your bounce effects correctly, knowing when to replay an enchantment versus deploying another threat, and identifying the right moment to transition from defense to offense all separate good pilots from great ones.
If you enjoy decks that reward careful planning, precise sequencing, and squeezing every ounce of value from your cards, Esper Loki Bounce is one of the most satisfying archetypes you can register right now.
Until next time, Planeswalkers, Hero out!
