Mechanics

The Lost Caverns of Ixalan mechanics:

  • Craft: The new ability craft focuses on two of the better parts of exploration: finding cool stuff and then building better stuff from the cool stuff you found. Each card with craft is a transforming double-faced card.
  • Transforming Double-Faced Cards: The Lost Caverns of Ixalan features other transforming double-faced cards in addition to those with craft. Many of these transform in more traditional ways, not leaving the battlefield and returning but rather just turning from front face to back face.
  • Descended: Onward toward Chimil we go! Several cards in this set have abilities that check if you’ve descended this turn. You’ve descended if a permanent card has been put into your graveyard from anywhere.
  • Descend and Fathomless Descent: Closely connected to descending are three ability words used to highlight abilities that all care about the number of permanent cards in your graveyard. How serendipitous!

Alchemy’s digital-only mechanics:

  • Conjure: Creates cards out of thin air as a digital object that acts just like a normal card would (as compared to tokens).
  • Seek: Cards with this mechanic will have the game randomly choose a card from the library that meets the criteria specified on the card and put it in to your hand.
  • Perpetual: Permanently changes a card’s properties, whether they are in exile, graveyard, hand, or battlefield.
  • Spellbook: Conjure one from among three randomly selected (draft) from a card’s Spellbook.
  • Intensity: Cards with intensity will start with their intensity at a certain value, and the card’s text will include mechanics for perpetually increasing or decreasing its intensity as the game goes on.
  • Boon: Boon is a way to represent delayed triggers, similar to an emblem, but once they trigger, they disappear.
