Competitive Metagame Challenge is a type of event that is available not long after the release of a new set, where players test their mettle for one of the biggest reward payouts in MTG Arena. It has now been over two weeks since the release of Throne of Eldraine and Standard rotation. What is Competitive Metagame Challenge?

Bring your Standard deck and play best-of-three matches! You’ll receive rewards based on how many matches you win.

Competitive Metagame Challenge is a Standard event that gives players the opportunity to win huge rewards in a relatively new metagame where the new cards from the latest set are being tested, and decklists are being refined. As always, few things to note:

  • Best-of-three matches: Unlike many of the previous events, this event requires you to bring a sideboard!
  • Changing decks: You cannot change cards in your deck or change your deck in between matches once you have paid the entry fee and registered your deck.
  • High variance: After just one match loss, the event is over and you will have pay the entry fee again.

The best way to reap the rewards is to play the best deck – read on as we will help you choose what deck to play this weekend, and what to expect from your opponents.

Expected Value (EV)

As you can see by the reward structure above, the event has a very high variance. Most of the value of the event comes after your fifth win, though getting to three wins will at least guarantee your entry fee returned.

Your win rate is also a big factor in succeeding this event (similar to the Win Every Card Challenge event), the chances to achieve that are relatively small. Your win rate also will not be consistent as you are matched against players of the same (or similar) record, so as you progress it will get harder. Please refer to the chart above by Frank Karsten.

That being said, this event is a great opportunity for players to boost their collection significantly, where you will be rewarded for your skill and knowledge of the deck you have chosen.

The Current Standard Metagame

MTG Arena Standard Decks – Metagame Tier List – October 2019

The first place to start is to make sure to check out our new Standard Metagame section, where we list most of the popular deck archetypes used in the latest tournaments, events and ladder.

As of writing this, we are currently seeing the dominance of Golos, Tireless Pilgrim and Field of the Dead decks. Players are finding that rather than building decks to combat this strategy directly, it is probably better to refine aggressive decklists to go under it and also punish the slower decks in the meta at the same time (like the Jeskai Fires decks).

In the latest Fandom Legends Week 27 tournament, Martin Juza clinched the winning title with this version of Mono Red Aggro versus Brad Nelson’s Golos Fires deck in the finals. Another interesting deck choice came from semi-finalist Kanister, with his Mono Blue Dredge deck that is also particularly strong against the Golos decks. This also means that there may be a high percentage of aggro decks in the meta now as well, forming a paper-scissor-rock kind of effect, where midrange and more controlling decks can perform well also.

Our Competitive Metagame Challenge Decklist Choices

With all that being said, here are some decks curated by us that we feel will be strong in this event. Remember, there are tonnes more decks in our Standard Deck section that you can select from! The most safest option would be the Golos deck, followed by the Mono Red deck.
