Hello my fellow Planeswalkers, I am The MTG Hero and today we will bediscussing one of my favorite current Standard decks that looks strange at first glance, but the second you play against it or play it yourself a few times, you realize just how powerful it really is.
I am talking about Selesnya Gearhulk! This deck that has been making serious waves in Standard since Pro Tour Secrets of Strixhaven.
Piloted by Matt Nass to a Top 4 finish with a 9-1 record, while another teammate posted an impressive 7-3 finish, this archetype immediately put players on notice. While Pro Tour metagames can sometimes differ from what we see on Arena ladder or local events, this deck lines up incredibly well against the current Standard field and deserves attention.
Running a full playset of Keen-Eyed Curator in the main deck may seem excessive at first, but it makes perfect sense right now. Between the multiple Izzet variants, Sultai Reanimator, and Landfall strategies relying on graveyard value, the effect is incredibly relevant. Even in matchups where the graveyard hate matters less, a 3/3 body for two mana is still perfectly acceptable.
Despite surviving yet another Banned and Restricted announcement, Badgermole Cub continues to dominate Standard. If the Cub survives for even a turn cycle, it allows us to deploy threats far ahead of curve and quickly snowball the game.
Much like the Simic decks that controlled the format for months, this deck also utilizes a strong “go-wide” strategy with Ouroboroid acting as the primary payoff.
Choosing Selesnya over Simic gives the deck access to even more ways to flood the battlefield and overwhelm opponents with sheer board presence.
The real headline card, however, is Brightglass Gearhulk. This massive threat not only creates an enormous battlefield presence, but it also tutors up two one-drops directly from the deck.
The Gearhulk can also find Nurturing Pixie, allowing us to rebuy valuable enters-the-battlefield effects. Bouncing Pawpatch Recruit lets us recast it with Offspring for additional value, while returning Brightglass Gearhulk itself can generate even more card advantage later in the game.
Pawpatch Recruit is already a strong standalone creature, punishing opponents for relying on targeted removal. When paired with Offspring, however, things get out of hand quickly. Doubling up on the Recruit forces opponents into incredibly awkward situations where removing one threat simply strengthens the rest of our board.
The deck even borrows a trick from Azorius Tempo by playing a full set of Sage of the Skies. For just four mana total, by casting a one-drop followed by the Sage, we create two evasive 2/3 creatures with lifelink. Against aggressive decks trying to race, the combo of Ouroboroid with Sage wins by itself.
Soul-Guide Lantern has become a staple sideboard card across Standard. Honestly, if your deck can support it and you aren’t running at least a couple copies somewhere in the 75, you are willingly giving up percentage points against a huge portion of the field.
While being in white gives us access to Rest in Peace, like Matt Nass chose to play, I personally prefer Soul-Guide Lantern in this shell for several reasons.
Most importantly, it being a one-drop means we can tutor it directly onto the battlefield with Brightglass Gearhulk, giving us immediate access to graveyard hate exactly when we need it.
The Lantern also replaces itself when its graveyard hate is unnecessary, keeping our cards flowing instead of clogging our hand. Unlike Rest in Peace, it also doesn’t interfere with Keen-Eyed Curator growing into an enormous threat over the course of the game.
Erode is essentially Path to Exile turned up to eleven. One mana interaction simply does not get much better than this right now, and having efficient removal like this is critical for keeping pace with the aggressive decks in the format.
Insidious Fungus gives us a flexible, searchable answer to problematic artifacts and enchantments. The added utility of cashing it in for cards during grindy games gives it even more value, especially in longer matchups where resources matter.
Surrak, Elusive Hunter continues to prove why it’s a staple in green sideboards. One of this deck’s biggest weaknesses is overextending into removal-heavy strategies, and Surrak punishes opponents for trying to trade one-for-one by immediately replacing our fallen threats with fresh cards.
The deck brings in a full set of Nature's Rhythm alongside a single copy of Craterhoof Behemoth against Landfall and other slower control decks or non-interactive strategies.
This package allows the deck to completely pivot gears and simply overwhelm opponents out of nowhere with a massive finishing swing. Against decks lacking instant-speed interaction, resolving this combo usually ends the game on the spot.
Selesnya Gearhulk feels like one of the stronger under-the-radar aggressive decks in Standard right now and has a proven track record of success.
It is highly adaptable to the meta and can be tailored to take on any deck, giving it a midrange feel in deck building.
Gearhulk combines explosive openings, layered synergy, evasive threats, and strong value generation into a strategy that can pressure opponents from multiple angles simultaneously.
More importantly, the deck scales surprisingly well into longer games thanks to its engines and bounce interactions.
If the format continues slowing down around midrange value decks, this archetype could easily become a major player moving forward.
Until next times Planeswalkers, Hero out!
