First Look at Double Masters 2022, Dominaria United, Warhammer 40,000, Alchemy Horizons: Baldur’s Gate, and More

Magic: The Gathering has some big announcements lined up for us, as today’s Wizards of the Coast’s Weekly MTG live stream was named “Monthly Announcement Day” that previewed a bunch of products coming in 2022 – and beyond. A lot of them were previously known by name only, but today we delve just a little bit deeper into each of the upcoming sets.

Of course, we will be covering them in more detail over time, but for now here is the run down from Wizards of the Coast, as well as the replay of the stream that you can watch above. We will break them down by each category, along with the transcript from the original article here.

Warhammer 40,000

The Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond crossover with other IPs have featured the likes of Walking Dead, Stranger Things, Arcane, and Street Fighter so far and more in the pipeline such as a collaboration with Fortnite and Lord of the Rings! The next one to come however, is one with Warhammer 40,000, launching four Commander decks, each with a Collector’s Edition and three Secret Lair drops.

The products and the new cards, as usual, are only legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage and are exclusive to tabletop Magic: The Gathering. There is no information about related MTG Arena products.

A FIRST LOOK AT MAGIC: THE GATHERING’S UNIVERSES BEYOND WARHAMMER 40,000 COLLABORATION

On August 12, universes will collide with Magic: The Gathering‘s Universes Beyond Warhammer 40,000 collaboration. This collaboration between two iconic tabletop titans, Warhammer 40,000 and Magic: The Gathering, includes the release of four Commander decks and three Secret Lair drops. Both releases bring the grimdark lore, iconic art, and warring factions of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into Magic‘s multiverse.

COMMAND A NEW BATTLEFIELD IN THE FAR FUTURE’S ENDLESS WAR

Grab your friends and step into the helm of Warhammer 40,000‘s legendary characters. This collaboration aims to stay as authentic to Warhammer 40,000 factions and strategies as possible, so whether fielding a squad of the Imperium’s forces, resurrecting fallen Necrons, amassing a swarm of Tyranids, or harnessing the chaotic powers of the Warp, fans should delight in seeing iconic characters and strategies.

If you’re new to the world of Warhammer 40,000, this a great opportunity to get a taste of the deep lore and amazing stories that makeup the Warhammer 40,000 universe, as well as build out your Commander deck with new commanders and brand-new artwork.

The collaboration will consist of four ready-to-play, preconstructed 100-card Commander decks and three Secret Lair drops. If you’re new to Magic, Commander is an exciting, unique way to play Magic that is all about awesome legendary creatures, big plays, and battling your friends in epic multiplayer games! More information on the format can be found here.

Prefer playing a different format? Individual cards from the collaboration will be legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage.

Here’s the more detailed breakdown of everything that’s part of this collaboration:

  • Four commander decks that also come in a Collector’s Edition and a unique “Universes Beyond” frame.
    • Decks:
      • Tyranid Swarm (green-blue-red)
      • Forces of the Imperium (white-blue-black)
      • Necron Dynasties (mono-black)
      • The Ruinous Powers (blue-black-red)
    • The Collector’s Edition comes fully foiled with the never-before-seen special surge foil and has the same card content. Images below!
  • Three Secret Lair drops, which we’re excited to share more info on later.
    • Secret Lair x Warhammer 40,000: Orks
    • Secret Lair x Warhammer Age of Sigmar
    • Secret Lair x Blood Bowl

MAGIC: THE GATHERING‘S UNIVERSES BEYOND WARHAMMER 40,000 COLLABORATION KEY DATES

  • Previews Begin: July 26
  • Secret Lair Drop: August 12–22
  • Worldwide Release: August 12
  • Launch Weekend Event: August 12–14

THE FIRST PREVIEWS

As some within the Imperium are known to say, “While the enemies of the Emperor still draw breath, there can be no peace.” But there can be preview cards! Warhammer 40,000 has deep lore that we’ve evoked through each card. From basic lands to commander staples, each card has been reimagined and was chosen for its iconic flavor or gameplay impact.

Dates, artwork, and first previews for Warhammer 40,000 were shared earlier on Weekly MTG.

Looking for a written breakdown? We’ve got all the preview cards right here.

Abaddon, the Despoiler

First up is Abaddon, the Despoiler, the face of “The Ruinous Powers” deck. “Ruinous” is not an understatement for the power of this iconic character, either. Abaddon and his forces are so powerful in Warhammer 40,000 lore that they literally tore the galaxy in two, divided by a tremendous warp rift known as the Cicatrix Maledictum.

Blood for the Blood God

“Blood for the blood god, Skulls for the skull throne” is the battle cry for the Warhammer 40,000 Chaos legions of Khorne and his followers. Drawing strength from battle, Khorne’s followers in the 41st Millennium are bloodthirsty zealots who live for war, and this card’s mechanics reflect that flavor. This card costs less to cast as things on the battlefield die, whether those are your forces or an opponent’s. Remember, “Khorne cares not from whence the blood flows, only that it flows.”

Vanguard Suppressor

Vanguard Suppressors align with the Warhammer 40,000 Ultramarines faction, who are defenders of Humanity and among the greatest of the Emperor’s warriors. In addition to the great artwork, this card comes with an exciting new token-related mechanic.

Fabricate

The promo card, Fabricate, won’t appear in the Commander decks, but you can get your hands on it if you go to your local game store on launch day. This exciting card features Belisarius Cawl, one of the most powerful members of the Imperium and fabricator of some of Warhammer 40,000‘s most legendary artifacts.

Finally, did our mention of a new, never-before-seen surge foil grab your interest? We’ll have pictures to share closer to release!

Double Masters 2022

The second Double Masters set will be returning in 2022, with awaited reprints and new artwork. Once again, this product is designed for drafting but available only for tabletop and Magic Online.

Double Masters 2022 arrives July 8, bringing with it a return of the exciting features of the original Double Masters release in 2020:

Jumpstart

Jumpstart has been a popular way for players – especially new – to jump into quick games on Magic that combines the fun of opening boosters and combining two usually unrelated themes to create a ready-to-play deck.

MTG Arena has seen the original Jumpstart, its own unique Jumpstart Horizons, and the evergreen Jump In! event that allows players to collect chase cards at a more efficient rate. New cards from these sets have been introduced into the Alchemy and Historic formats.

The big news is that every set will have its accompanying Jumpstart packs as well, to replace the Theme Boosters. Whether they will mirror the new pack additions to the Jump In! event is yet to be known.

Let’s double down on the Dominaria United update: In addition to the Draft, Set, and Collector Boosters you already know, we’re adding a fan favorite to the mix as well. Beginning with Dominaria United, each Standard set release also includes themed Jumpstart packs!

Dominaria United Jumpstart Pack

Replacing Theme Boosters, fan-favorite Jumpstart packs let players new and returning alike mix, match, and enjoy the mayhem of unique themes with each latest release. Jumpstart packs in Dominaria United and beyond follow the original Jumpstart release where each pack is a hidden theme to discover when you open, and shuffling any two packs together is all you need to be ready to play.

Each set will include several themes, each feeling right at home with what the set offers players—but don’t let that stop you from mixing and matching for more mayhem as Jumpstart packs release from Dominaria United and beyond!

Jumpstart packs for Dominaria United feature cards from the set, including a rare or mythic rare, two foil basic lands, and a mechanically unique rare designed for the Jumpstart pack. Plus, these Jumpstart packs will be available as part of Dominaria United Prerelease events September 2–8!

Alchemy Horizons: Baldur’s Gate

A follow up to the cross between Dungeons & Dragons since Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate is releasing on June 10 with tonnes of new cards designed for the Commander format.

Although the product is specifically for tabletop as well, to keep the MTG Arena players occupied during a big break between the two Standard sets (5 months between Streets of New Capenna and Dominaria United), we are getting our own Baldur's Gate set on July 7!

There will be over 250 new cards to MTG Arena, and will be legal for Alchemy and Historic play. It will combine a selection of cards from Battle for Baldur's Gate, some digitally rebalanced for 1v1 on Arena, and brand new digital-only cards. Notably, unlike previous Alchemy sets, it will be getting its own Draft events, Mastery Pass, and more.

In the prosperous and influential city of Baldur's GateMagic and Dungeons & Dragons cross over once more in Alchemy Horizons: Baldur’s Gate—arriving July 7 to MTG Arena!

Alchemy Horizons: [card name=
