Phyrexia: All Will Be One Constructed Set Review and Decklists: White

With the full spoiler of Phyrexia: All Will Be One released, DoggertQBones is reviewing the best cards from each color as well as providing sample decklists! To start off, he's examining the White cards!

Hello everyone! With the full spoiler for Phyrexia: All Will Be One live, we can finally get into breaking down the cards with constructed applications!

Since I did individual card reviews already, rather than repeat myself, I’ll link the article, but still give the verdict and decklist if that’s what you’re more interested in. For this, I’m going to cover every Mythic, every Rare, and then choice uncommons and commons that have potential. Let’s get into it!

As always, here’s the scale I’ll be using to label the new cards that potentially have constructed applications.

  • 0/5 – Unplayable in every sense.
  • 1/5 – Extremely niche play or very unlikely to see play.
  • 2/5 – Niche to no play, maybe playable in certain conditions.
  • 3/5 – Reasonable playable. Not format breaking, but has the power level to see play in some strategy (or strategies).
  • 4/5 – Very strong card, but not the best the format has to offer. Has the power level to see a lot of play.
  • 5/5 – The very top of the format. This card will create a huge impact going forward on the format.

Phyrexia: All Will Be One Constructed Reviews

Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines

While this is surely going to be a Commander staple, the Constructed applications of the sets flagship card feel a bit more nebulous.

First off, a 5 mana 4/7 Vigilance is a relatively strong stat line. It’s going to be pretty hard to kill in combat (barring Sheoldred, the Apocalypse anyway), so it’ll likely just keep attacking no matter what and can block pretty much anything to boot.

However, we’re hardly looking to play Elesh Norn for the stat line. The dual ability of Panharmonicon for you and Tocatli Honor Guard for the opponent may look gimmicky, but is actually quite powerful. If there are decks reliant on their creatures abilities, this can completely lock them out. Conversely, any ability that you have gets doubled which can range from solid value to insanely powerful, dependent on the card. That said, no deck in Standard is either super reliant on playing creatures with ETBs, so it’s hard to see where we would want Elesh Norn whether it’s for a particular deck or to play against something. Nevertheless, this card is definitely powerful enough to see play, and while it’s up in the air if Elesh Norn will see play, it definitely has a lot of potential.

Mondrak, Glory Dominus

First Elesh Norn doubles ETB triggers and this doubles tokens? This set really likes doubling stuff!

A four mana 4/4 is pretty reasonable, but the indestructible trigger is definitely tougher to get on Mondrak compared to the other Mythics as you need to sacrifice two permanents and have minimum one mana open. A bit painful, but not a dealbreaker.

Similar to Elesh Norn, we once again encounter a card that looks promising, but is hard to pin what should be done with it. Doubling tokens is definitely a powerful ability, Anointed Procession saw some reasonable play back in its Standard format, but there aren’t too many token producers in Standard that you would absolutely love to get double of. The only real exceptions I can think of are, thankfully, very powerful cards in Wedding Announcement and Fable of the Mirror-Breaker as both of those cards produce quite high value tokens. Could this see play in some Boros(x) shell to double those tokens and maybe others? I’d say there’s some definite potential there!

Skrelv, Defector Mite

Mother of Runes? Is that you? Well, not quite, but this card is still quite good! For one Phyrexian mana and just tapping it, you can give one of your other creatures pseudo protection from a color! That’s a pretty good deal as we haven’t had this effect in Standard in a looooooooong time. While this is an obvious slam dunk in Toxic decks, this seems quite reasonable in White aggressive decks in general as being able to protect important creatures is good no matter the creature deck. The only issue I see with Skrelv is that it can’t fit into the Soldiers deck since it’s not a Soldier, but if regular Mono White ever makes its way back into the metagame, this will definitely be a part of it.

Rating: 3.5/5

Norn’s Wellspring

This is a very weird rare. Not only is this definitely not Constructed playable, it doesn’t even seem good in Limited! Sure, on turn two it may prove a nuisance in Limited, but past that, the strength of this card will fall off very fast. I don’t see any real applications for this card at the moment, but I wouldn’t completely rule it out either.

Rating: 1/5

Kemba, Kha Enduring

If there were a bigger Equipment theme in this set, I could see this being quite powerful. It does synergize well with the For Mirrodin! cards, but those aren’t particularly playable which is awkward. That said, this could work in older formats as a creature that can pick up a Colossus Hammer which is a bit tempting! Even in that shell, I’m not too convinced about Kemba, but there is at least a glimmer of hope there.

Rating: 2.5/5

Skrelv’s Hive

I think a lot of people are going to make the same mistake I made when first looking at this card: “Oh look, a Toxic card!” While this is definitely an excellent Toxic card, this is just a really powerful card in general. Generating a near endless stream of 1/1s is very powerful, and even if you’re not playing a Toxic deck, this can be a brutal win condition against another grindy deck as these Mites will not quit. Best yet, once you get the opponent to 3 poison counters, the Mite can refund you the life investment as well making this hard to die to as well! This is no Bitterblossom, but that’s a disgustingly high bar, and this isn’t as incredibly far off as one may assume.

Bladed Ambassador

In the long line of two mana 3/1 uncommons that can be indestructible such as Adanto Vanguard, Seasoned Hallowblade, and kind of sort of Fleeting Spirit, this one is unfortunately the worst. Not only do you have to dedicate mana to making this indestructible, but you can only do it once! Those cards are good because they’re very hard to kill, but this is quite easy to get rid of in comparison. It’s not a terrible card, but without that guarantee of sticking around longer than the opponent would want, I’m not seeing the use.

Rating: 1.5/5

Jawbone Duelist

This will only ever see play in a Toxic deck as it’s functionally a 2 mana 2/2 Double Strike, but it will be pretty solid there, so no complaints!

Ossification

So this is two mana Chained to the Rocks that you don’t need to be Red and White for and can hit planeswalkers? SHEESH. I feel like this card is much better than many will give it credit for and the only strikes against it being: you need a basic land which may be hard to come by and there’s main deck Enchantment destruction like Tear Asunder, Destroy Evil, and Unleash the Inferno. Despite that, this card is still good and can easily see play in something like Mono White Midrange if they need more of that effect.

Rating: 3/5

Crawling Chorus

This is only playable in a Toxic deck, and even then, it’s not amazing, but serviceable! Doomed Traveler will always be an ok card, and this making two Toxic threats for one mana is a solid rate.

Rating: 2/5

End Step

While White doesn’t have any particular card that’s a huge standout, it has plenty of really solid ones which makes it a stronger color in this set for sure.
