Phyrexia: All Will Be One Limited Archetypes Guide and Example Decks

In this guide, we go over the 10 archetypes in Phyrexia: All Will Be One Limited, including example decks (archetype skeletons) for you to refer to.

Hey everyone! Welcome to the rest of your existence as part of the glorious one that we are here on New Phyrexia! Before everybody’s favorite mommy Elesh Norn arrives to allow you to bask in her splendor, I’ve been directed to walk you through the draft archetypes so you are fully prepared for what is to come.

For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of building archetype skeletons, it is a great exercise to see what a solid, but not broken version of the decks would look like. Each skeleton is limited to one rare (no mythics), 4-5 uncommons, and only two of each common.

One of the benefits of looking at these before jumping in is that you have a better idea of which cards go in which build. Its especially helpful in sets like this where synergistic decks with a plan are much more important than pure value.

For the purpose of this exercise, I am going to be keeping the mana bases static with 1 of each sphere land and a Terramorphic Expanse Obviously, you can have different combinations of these, some decks will want to limit it to two tap lands while some might go up to four. Overall land counts may very based on curve and mana producers, etc…

Azorius

The theme for Azorius is artifacts, but in general it still plays almost exactly like the typical aggressive blue white deck. You have some evasive threats and removal for things that might dare get in your way.

While you can build it differently, in this case you don’t worry about cards with corruption because it barely even touches toxic. You also lose some combat tricks since you don’t want to play Compleat Devotion without being able to draw the card. In this case, Charge of the Mites can sometimes fill that roll since it can give you +2/+2 to your Mandible Justiciar at instant speed by dropping the mites into play. Of course, you could always use it to blast the creature out of the way instead.

There are some cards that only go in this deck like Eye of Malcator and Veil of Assimilation. You need this high density of artifact triggers combined with the desire to always be the beatdown to take advantage of them.

While I was obviously tempted to just stuff The Eternal Wandereror White Sun's Twilight in, I’m trying to show some restraint. This deck actually has a good chance to get additional triggers off of Malcator, Purity Overseer which takes it from above average to busto.

Orzhov

It’s a good thing that Orzhov is the political color combination because it is all about corruption. You really need to ensure that you can get in some early poison counters or some of your cards won’t be pulling their weight. While killing by poison is a possibility here, you can also just snowball them with damage once corrupted is online.

The main corrupted cards here are Vivisection Evangelist and Incisor Glider, both of whom cause huge swings in the game once you hit those all-important three poison counters. This deck has enough early pressure that you shouldn’t have any trouble getting there.

Skrelv, Defector Mite or Skrelv's Hive would have been more on theme and potentially just as good here as Kaya, Intangible Slayer. Then I asked myself, “Who am I to pass up a hexproof planeswalker whose only real drawback is being heavy in these colors?”

Boros

Boros is its usual angry self where it spends the entirety of the game RAWRing at the opponent. In this case, it takes advantage of equipment to pump up the jams. The For Mirrodin! mechanic means that you don’t have to worry about the usual problem of not drawing creatures with your equipment.

All of your equipped creatures getting the attack bonus from Hexgold Hoverwings is huge here since you have so many creatures coming in already hooked up with some gear. Curving Bladegraft Aspirant into Dragonwing Glider is an especially devastating start that is going to be really hard to come back from.

Don’t underestimate how amazing Hexgold Slash can be here. One mana removal is almost always an amazing tempo play, but it is outright insane when you nail a four drop with it.

Selesnya

Don’t you know that you are toxic? Mashing into the red zone with toxic critters backed up by tricks and removal spells is Selesnya’s thing here. Outside of the poison counters, that sounds like some old school Magic right there (I am aware that poison counters started in Legends, I mean that it feels like kitchen table magic).

Slaughter Singer and Incisor Glider make your monsters grow more than Rita Repulsa while you simultaneously pressure your opponent’s life total and poison count. I tossed Bloated Contaminator in here because it presents a ridiculously huge early problem that proliferates every time it hits.

Dimir

The theme of Dimir is proliferating. This can be used to gain value from payoffs like Scheming Aspirant and Voidwing Hybrid or to outright win the game with poison counters. In a way, it vacillates between being a tempo control deck and a combo deck depending on the current board state.

Trawler Drake is interesting here as another win con that might be able to one shot them since you get two counters for each noncreature proliferate spell you cast.

I went with Venser, Corpse Puppet here because it’s a cheap threat that can wreck an unsuspecting opponent who attacks into it. I guess I’ll cast this Experimental Augury to make an instant speed 3/3 to blow you out.

Izzet

You’re in for a Shock (or maybe a Hexgold Slash) here, but the main theme of Izzet is casting spells. While it also has a theme of oil, a lot of it is triggered from casting spells or proliferating even more counters on the creatures.

There are plenty of ways to stack counters on Serum-Core Chimera including in one shot with Free from Flesh. That helps you shoot down smaller creatures while Mesmerizing Dose takes care of anything that shows up sporting size XXL.

Urabrask's Forge may seem like an odd inclusion here and its most likely better in Gruul Oil, but it offers a form of inevitability that ticks up quickly with proliferate running around. You should have no trouble finishing the game off between that, Trawler Drake, or an unblockable Ichor Synthesizer.

Simic

The theme of Simic is a combination of proliferating and toxic so it fits into the big Sultai box of the format. This is another combination that can pressure both the life total and poison simultaneously.

I’ve been really impressed with Tamiyo's Immobilizer as it’s been pretty close to a free to activate Icy Manipulator with proliferate keeping it going long after the game is over. Armored Scrapgorger is another big overperformer so far (hmm…almost like I have an article about that coming up) and I’m thrilled to have it in any green deck.

I went with the signpost rare because I love drawing extra cards and it turns so many of the other cards into cantrips. The double proliferate is also potentially game ending.

Rakdos

The theme of Rakdos is creatures dying. Whether that’s your creatures or your opponent’s is up to you. The threaten effect being uncommon makes it a lot harder to run Rakdos’ time-honored tradition of stealing their creatures to sacrifice. That leaves you with a ridiculous arsenal of available removal and plenty of dorky creatures to swing away with.

Getting a disposable 1/1 from Charforger and Chimney Rabble really helps with having fodder for Annihilating Glare. It also gives you the opportunity for triggers off of Vraan, Executioner Thane without losing something you might actually care about.

Golgari

Golgari is unsurprisingly planning on poisoning their opponent. It combines various toxic creatures with proliferate to get there. So basically, the entire Sultai wedge is about that life.

Necrogen Rotpriest turns every toxic creature into a serious threat by adding an extra toxic counter or giving them deathtouch. It’s a real Sophie’s choice for your poor opponent every combat. I went with Glissa Sunslayer here because while it doesn’t have toxic, it is such an individually powerful card that it demands removal or it will take over the game.

Gruul

The Gruul theme is beating down with large monsters based around oil counters. It has the usual bag of tricks, but Free from Flesh can be especially devastating when it hits an Evolving Adaptive to give it +4/+4 (with two of it being permanent) for only one mana.

Cinderslash Ravager is a massive beat stick that can come down on the cheap and completely clean up against some of the poison decks in the format. Why did I choose, Migloz, Maze Crusher? Because I played with it during early release and it was unfair every time I played it.
