Top Mythic Ladder Decks – January 2020 Season – Week 1

New year, new month and the new MTG Arena ranked season is in session! The January 2020 Season is named so because the new expansion Theros Beyond Death is dropping very soon on January 16. Players will finally have brand new cards and decks to explore, after what seemed like a very long 4 months since the release of Throne of Eldraine.

As for this season so far, players have been reaching the Mythic ranks within the first day of the season. So far, we estimate there are about 200 constructed Mythic players. Without further ado, let’s check some of them out!

Also be sure to check out our other top Mythic decks from the previous December season, as not too much has changed since:

Standard Decklists

Standard remains stable, if not a bit tedious for many by now but some players still have some business to finish. The Ikoria Mythic Qualifier #1 coming up on Saturday January 11, and players are testing existing decks, their own brews and trying to break Standard. Will we see anything like Kethis Combo from last year? Or will most play it safe with Jeskai Fires or Jund Sacrifice?

BO1 Mono Green Stompy by Steelgrip – #169 Mythic – January 2020 Season

According to the stats provided by Untapped.gg last month, Mono Green Stompy is one of the best performing decks in BO1. If big creatures ahead of their mana curve is your thing, then this deck archetype is still a viable option for this game mode.

Historic Decklists

Historic remains diverse and unsolved as ever, and this is the perfect time to play almost whatever you like and expect to perform decently. However, aggressive decks still look to have a bit of an edge over the slower decks such as Simic Nexus or Esper Control. With the Historic Challenge coming up this weekend on January 11, we may see some more refined decks being shared during this event!

Historic Bant Arkbow by Traxym – #37 Mythic – January 2020 Season

This is a sweet midrange creature-based deck built around Vivien's Arkbow and a few other creatures with Flash such as Nightpack Ambusher and Frilled Mystic. With access to mana acceleration, the deck can search your library for the silver bullet creature you need at the right time! Source: Twitter

Historic Mono Red Aggro by battaile – #148 Mythic – January 2020 Season

Mono Red Aggro is still a great deck to climb the ladder, especially after the Historic suspensions. Check out the reddit post by the deck's pilot for insights and sideboard guide! Source: Twitter

Historic Sultai Dreadhorde by Andrea Mengucci – #80 Mythic – January 2020 Season

This is the deck that took Magic Pro League member Andrea Mengucci took to Mythic this season. This deck combines the explore and ramp package, and tops it off with Command the Dreadhorde to bring them all back. Source: Twitch

This wraps up the Mythic decklist round up for the first week of the January 2020 Season! We do have a lot more decks coming on January 11 during Ikoria Mythic Qualifier #1 and the Historic Challenge, but these decks will only be relevant for 5 days or so due to the release of Theros Beyond Death. After that, we will of course keep everybody updated on the top decks in the fresh new metagame.

If you are more interesting in honing your drafting skills for Theros Beyond Death, we have some exciting things planned for this set! Check out today’s article The Trouble with Tier Lists in MTG Limited by Compulsion and find out what’s in the pipelines.

This column is our weekly roundup of Standard and Historic decks players are using to climb the ranked ladder on MTG Arena! Our goal is to curate and post a variety of deck archetypes and interesting card choices at the end of each week to help you keep up to date with the latest trends in the metagame. If you have any decks you wish to be featured, please tweet us at @mtgazone or give us a shout at our Discord.

Thank you for posting historic content! I like the format a lot so far- nonrotating unlike standard, but lower power level than pioneer and playable on arena.
