We’re right in the middle of spoiler season for the upcoming set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt! Yesterday, Sunday, September 5, only a handful of new cards were previewed, so we took a day off from the spoiler roundup. Today, we’re returning to have a look at the most exciting constructed cards from our last roundup to now. There’s nothing I could write here that would be more interesting than new cards, so let’s get straight into it!
Our Daily Roundup series will be continuing as previews roll out, but we’re going to try formatting things a little bit differently than in the past. Rather than listing all of the cards that are spoiled each day (there’s a very large volume of them), we’re going to break down the mythics, rares, and a selection of other cards that either show off new mechanics, seem impactful for constructed Standard, or are significant in some other way.
Our main spoilers page will still contain all of the spoilers from the set as they are released of course, including the draft commons and uncommons that may be omitted here.
Please let us know what you think of this change! There are a few things changing behind the scenes here at MTGA Zone and we are trying to find the best way to present the spoilers to our readers, so we are very interested in your feedback. You can leave a comment on this article or write us a message on the MTGA Zone Discord to share your thoughts.
A Few Notes:
This page is a WIP and will be regularly updated throughout the day as more cards are previewed.
Some cards are previewed in languages other than English with no official translation immediately available. Be aware that the exact wording of cards with non-English text may not be perfectly accurate.
Not all of the cards that have been revealed are listed on this page. Instead, the most interesting and impactful cards will be highlighted here; please see our main spoilers page to find all of the cards that have been previewed so far.
Without further ado, let’s dive into some spoilers! Cards have been listed alphabetically and categorized by rarity. See below for quick links for your browsing convenience.
Card Text: Lifelink When “Fearless Adversary” enters the battlefield, you may pay {1}{W} any number of times. When you pay this cost one or more times, put that many courage counters on “Fearless Adversary.” Creatures you control get +1/+1 for each courage counter on “Fearless Adversary.”
Power/Toughness: 3/1
Wow, this card looks like an absolute powerhouse for Standard! Some players online are already referring to this card as “the best 3/1 for 2 ever printed,” and it’s easy to see why. Anthem effects such as Rally the Ranks are often a part of White Weenie aggro decks, but they typically come with a built-in tension – White Weenie wants to play as many creatures as possible, and anthems are often on enchantments or other non-creature permanents that do literally nothing if you don’t have creatures on the board.
“Fearless Adversary” essentially has multi-kicker, allowing the caster to pour as much mana as they would like into it to pump the team for as long as it sits on the battlefield. Sure, being on a creature means that the anthem effect is weaker to removal, but it also means that this card is never dead in your hand. A 3/1 for 2 is not a terrible card on its own, and the upside here is HUGE.
Spectral Adversary
Card Name: Spectral Adversary
Mana Cost: {1}{U}
Card Type: Creature – Spirit
Rarity: Mythic
Card Text: Flash Flying When Spectral Adversary enters the battlefield, you may pay {1}{U} any number of times. When you pay this cost one or more times, put that many +1/+1 counters on Spectral Adversary, then up to that many other target artifacts, creatures, and/or enchantments phase out.
Power/Toughness: 2/1
Tainted Adversary
Card Name: Tainted Adversary
Mana Cost: {1}{B}
Card Type: Creature – Zombie
Rarity: Mythic
Card Text: Lifelink When Tainted Adversary enters the battlefield, you may pay {2}{B} any number of times. When you pay this cost one or more times, put that many +1/+1 counters on Tainted Adversary, then create twice that many 2/2 black Zombie creature tokens with decayed.
Power/Toughness: 2/3
This card might not be as much of an attention grabber as “Fearless Adversary”, but Tainted Adversary also seems quite good. If you’re paying 5 mana into this thing to pay the extra cost a single time, you’re already getting a 3/4 deathtouch and two 2/2 tokens – a total of 7/8 in stats, and they’re all Zombies which might be very relevant.
Sure, the tokens have decayed which is a significant downside, but the value is there on this card, and I expect it will be quite good in the format. Whether you’re using the tokens as sacrifice fodder or just turning them sideways for extra pressure, three bodies for five mana is an excellent rate.
Moonveil Regent
Card Name: Moonveil Regent
Mana Cost: {3}{R}
Card Type: Creature – Dragon
Rarity: Mythic
Card Text: Flying Whenever you cast a spell, you may discard your hand. If you do, draw a card for each of that spell’s colors. When Moonveil Regent dies, it deals X damage to any target, where X is the number of colors among permanents you control.
Power/Toughness: 4/4
Yeah, I know this card is out of the alphabetical order but I wanted to keep the two Adversary cards together. As for Moonveil Dragon itself, this card has a pretty high ceiling but a pretty low floor. I suspect it might become more relevant next year when we get Streets of New Capenna, a three-color set that should help this guy draw more cards. It is a “may” ability, which helps a ton since you don’t actually have to discard your hand unless it’s beneficial to you, but still I’m not super optimistic about this card until it gets more support.
Card Text: You may look at the top card of your library any time. You may play lands from the top of your library. Coven – As long as you control three or more creatures with different powers, you may cast creature spells from the top of your library.
Power/Toughness: 2/3
A quasi-Courser of Kruphix that also has psudo-Vizier of the Menagerie stapled on if you can meet its condition? We’ve seen these effects before, and they’re usually good enogh to see play in Standard.
Geist Patrician
Card Name: Geist Patrician
Mana Cost: {2}{U}
Card Type: Creature – Spirit Knight
Rarity: Rare
Card Text: Flying Other spirits you control get +1/+1. Spells you cast from your graveyard cost {1} less to cast.
Power/Toughness: 2/2
A Spirit lord! Players have been trying to make the Spirit tribe work in Historic for a long time, and Geist Patrician is another tool to help it get there. There isn’t much support for Spirits in Standard as of now, but we are doing two full sets of Innistrad in a row, so it could happen.
Ghoulcaller’s Harvest
Card Name: Ghoulcaller’s Harvest
Mana Cost: {B}{G}
Card Type: Sorcery
Rarity: Rare
Card Text: Create X 2/2 black Zombie creature tokens with decayed, where X if half the number of creature cards in your graveyard, rounded up. Flashback {3}{B}{G}
There’s a lot of support for self-mill and graveyard synergies in this set, so I could see this card doing some work in Standard. That being said, it doesn’t feel busted by any means and there are a number of things holding the power level back. It could potentially fit into the Golgari Magecraft-style decks that were popular at the beginning of the Standard 2022 format, but those decks fell out of favor as the format progressed and I’m not sure how good they will be in a post Midnight Hunt world. I’m definitely curious to see what players come up with for this card.
Grafted Identity
Card Name: Grafted Identity
Mana Cost: {2}{U}{U}
Card Type: Enchantment – Aura
Rarity: Rare
Card Text: As an additional cost to cast this spell, sacrifice a creature. Enchant creature You control enchanted creature. Enchanted creature gets +1/+1.
Liesa, Forgotten Archangel
Card Name: Liesa, Forgotten Archangel
Mana Cost: {2}{W}{W}{B}
Card Type: Legendary Creature – Angel
Rarity: Rare
Card Text: Flying, lifelink Whenever another nontoken creature you control dies, return that card to its owner’s hand at the beginning of the next end step. If a creature an opponent controls would die, exile it instead.
Power/Toughness: 4/5
“Forgotten Archangel” couldn’t be a more appropriate title for this card, as when I commented on the new printing of Sigarda I thought she was dead, murdered by Avacyn or corrupted by Emrakul along with the other Innistrad angels. Apparently, she survived and now she’s getting a pretty interesting new card.
I think this card looks okay but not great. It doesn’t really do anything the turn it enters the battlefield (unless you start having creatures die right away, in which case you can start making use of her first ability that’s reminiscent of the plus on Kaya The Inexorable) and that’s definitely a strike against it. That being said, I could see this being a fairly popular sideboard tool, or perhaps maindeck for angel tribal or if graveyard shenanigans are rampant in the new format.
I might be underrating this card, but I’ve seen many creatures like this that don’t really end up doing much in Standard. Similar to Kaya, it’s definitely better if your deck is built to make consistent use of the first triggered ability.
Card Text: {2}, {T}: Draw a card. Transform “Mysterious Tome”.
Card Name: “Creepy Chronicle”
Card Type: Artifact
Rarity: Uncommon
Card Text: {1}, {T}: Tap target permanent you don’t control. Transform “Creepy Chronicle”.
Mazemind Tome at home? “Mysterious Tome” seems to me like a worse version of the control deck staple that will be rotating out with Midnight Hunt’s release, and yet I still think it will see a healthy amount of play in grindy control decks.
We’ll be continuing to cover ongoing spoilers for Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, so stay tuned and be sure to check out our full spoilers page in the meantime.
