MTGArena Metagame

Standard Metagame updates April 2026

Metagame protagonists in standard 2026, where is the meta going now that the turtles settled in, and the Secrets of Strixhaven are about to come

Hey everyone and welcome to another update on Metagame news for Standard constructed on Magic: The Gathering Arena, MTGArena, I will cover what is being mostly played by now and some much needed insights on the format, what I love particularly on Standard it tends to be the safest minimalist format for simple strategies with minimal and controlled powerhouses, although WotC is having issues trying to control Izzet for more than a year now, Mono red was the powerhouse before, with what I used to call the Mice-hate gang and then shifted into Izzet, Izzet cauldron, and now Izzet lesson gran-gran for being a notoriously fast and solid control options, so let’s take a look.

Izzet Lesson

This deck is all about consistency 4 copies of everything you need to set Monument to Endurance to thrive, this monument wants discard effects, and Gran-Gran helps you do so and also in the mid game to cheap further spells, It'll Quench Ya! is a fantastic counterspell even if I hate to say it, but this deck is tight to work around, as there’s plenty of control option to choose from, it will put Gran-Gran in play, and from then on, its a battle to scrath life down or the Monument will do its thing eventually.

Nature’s Rythm

The core of this deck relies on Badgermole Cub, Ouroboroid and Nature's Rythm, the cub will help you giving you more mana from mana dorks = Llanowar Elves Gene Pollinator and Earthbent lands, The great wurm plant Ouroboroid will bring more power to creatures for steady attacks each turn and decimate blocking progress from your opponent, and lastly Nature’s Rythm job is to basically cast from the deck whatever you need, so the mental around the Rythm is you basically have in your hand a wildcard to summon anything from the deck into the battlefield really easy, what will happen in this types of matches you’ll be the aggressor and the opponent will be forced to react every turn until exhaustion and isn’t able to develop a proper boardstate, the only downside to this idea is board wipes, anything that wipes the board will do you more harm than when McDonald’s had the Grime Shake around.

Mono Green Landfall

Kind of similar idea than the Rythm’s but this is pure Landfall trigger power critters and mana dorks will fill the battlefield in the early turns might not seem much, these decks have an early turn proficiency with mana dorks and Badgermole Cub, Esper Origins brings the option to be cast from the graveyard and will enter from the backside of the card with better effects that will bring more options to the table even adding two green mana next turn.

Icetill Explorer is still one of the best cards in the archetype, getting extra landfall triggers is always useful, Earthbender Ascension to me to this day is still impressive Standard is lacking Trample sources and WotC is afraid to reprint Overrun, trample is pretty good attrition ability as it disables completely chump blocking.

Orzhov Aggro

Different from our usual suspects Orzhov Aggro, Deep-Cavern Bat I love to see this cheeky little bat doing its thing, really good for Black to have options to be present rather than the Dimir options available, Zoraline, Cosmos caller will revive every three drop or less from graveyard to battlefield, Haliya, Guided by light is the hero of the deck bringing life gain options and also draw options in white? yes please!

Wrapping Up

Metagame is not changing much, Izzet is still dominiting and Ouroboroid is gaining traction, Mono green still has too much obstacles to cover to make it Meta Tier 1, and with the upcoming Secrets of Strixhaven, I believe Izzet is going to be more prominent, but maybe Silverquill college changes things into a more white oriented Meta, or make more than shift than their Turtles counterparts
