Hey everyone! As Forrest Gump’s mom said, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get”. That is the best way to explain this week’s Momir event. Some people love the event while others think that it is everything that has ever gone wrong with Magic.
The best way to put it is that you’re going to have a great time as long as you don’t mind turning the randomness dial up to eleven. It’s an interesting way to relax and not take Magic seriously for a bit. Personally I find a small dose of it to be pretty entertaining, but it would easily overstay it’s welcome if it was around longer than a few days at a time.
Momir is very simple. Your entire deck is basic lands and you have an emblem that let’s you pay x mana to discard a card to create a random creature of that casting cost. There really isn’t that much strategy involved, but I’ll go over what little there is after some event info.
Event Details
Use the emblem, discard a card, and pay X to create a token copy of a random creature card with mana value X. Every turn is a surprise!
Duration: April 14th, 2026 @ 2:00 PM PST to April 16th, 2026 @ 2:00 PM PST
Format: Momir
Entry Fee: Free
Ends After: You can play as much as you like for the duration of the event.
The general consensus is that eight is the magic number for the casting cost that you want to get up to and keep making creatures at. Without hitting any mana rampers or card draw, that means you want to start using the emblem on turn three if you’re on the play and turn two if you’re on the draw.
Combat math can be really important here. You don’t have to worry about any tricks that aren’t on board since the decks are all land. Take the time and figure it out.
Since everything is a token, something like Hoverguard Sweepers is a massive swing since it straight up kills their best two dudes. Anything that gives a bonus to tokens is at a premium as well. There are plenty of cards that they might as well scoop to such as Platinum Angel or Sundering Titan.
Obviously, there is a lot of luck involved. Any form of early ramp can put you so far ahead of your opponent, but in most games it is really who hits on those late game rolls that matter.
Wrap Up
Thanks for reading! I’ll be back soon to talk about the limited archetypes of Secrets of Strixhaven followed up by your next hit of Midweek Magic. Until then, stay classy people!
