Seek Mechanic

Reminder Text

To seek a card, put one at random from your library into your hand.

Description

Seek is a digital-only, Magic: The Gathering Arena exclusive keyword action mechanic first introduced in Jumpstart: Historic Horizons. A card with this mechanic will have the game randomly choose a card from the library that meets the criteria specified on the card and put it in to your hand.

This ability can be seen as a more broad variation of the powerful “tutor” effect (finding a specific card from the library) that you can build your deck around, so that you can take maximum advantage of its effects and ideally find the cards you need.

To take advantage of the digital client, there is no shuffling of the deck and no time spent looking at options as the game resolves the ability by itself automatically without any player input. Unlike paper Magic: The Gathering, players will not see any of the cards from the library as the game searches for the card.

Cards

As of March 6, 2022 there are 17 cards in MTG Arena referencing the Seek keyword. As this is a digital-only ability, cards have been designed only for the digital MTG Arena formats such as Alchemy or Historic.

Jumpstart: Historic Horizons

5 cards with seek was first introduced with Jumpstart: Historic Horizons, to herald the first digital-only cards in MTG Arena. As the set name suggests, these cards were made legal in Historic formats but not in Standard.

Alchemy: Innistrad

12 new cards with seek was introduced with Alchemy: Innistrad, the first digital-only set for the brand new Alchemy format. These cards subsequently also became legal in Historic.

Alchemy: Kamigawa

12 new cards with seek was introduced with Alchemy: Innistrad, the first digital-only set for the brand new Alchemy format. These cards subsequently also became legal in Historic.

Decks

Alchemy

The first version of Inquisitor Captain when it was released was so powerful that it eventually had to be rebalanced. Clerics was one deck that took advantage of it to its maximum potential as it shared the creature type.

Historic

Elves in Historic is a great linear strategy in best-of-one as it can quickly overrun opponents if left unchecked. Freyalise, Skyshroud Partisan has been used as a way of building value in case you run into control decks.
