The Top 10 Mythic Rares to Craft in Standard Based on Data – Full Breakdown and Decklists

Mythic wildcards are one of the hardest commodities to come by in Arena and DoggertQBones want to make sure you don't waste yours! Find out what the safest crafts are this Standard season to get the most out of your wildcards!

Hello everyone! Today we’re going to do something a bit different and do an Arena economy article! I know there’s a lot of contention surrounding the economy, but one thing is for sure: Rare and Mythic Rare wildcards are very precious commodities. These are generally going to be the life blood of any new deck you’re looking to brew, so if you run out of those, it’s going to be next to impossible crafting anymore decks. Worst of all, if you spend them to craft a deck/cards you think are good, then you realize they aren’t! It’s the worst and something I’ve certainly been guilty of many times over the course of my Arena career. For the top 10 Rare cards to craft, consult the guide below:

With that, I figured I want to save everyone the pain of the same mistakes I’ve made. If I use metagame knowledge, deck knowledge, and raw data to comb through every good deck and figure out what Mythics are the most played, it’ll be impossible to ever waste wildcards! Today, I’m looking at the top 10 best Mythic crafts for Standard based on win rate date, play rate data, how many you need, and how transferable they are to other decks.

Before I continue, this article was greatly helped by the data procured from Untapped.gg. If you’re interested in checking out their site and downloading their deck tracker, you can click right here.

Let’s get into it.

Starting us off we have the biggest spell around, Magma Opus! Despite being very powerful, it’s pretty restricted in the most obvious way, it costs 8 mana. However, with the printing of Hinata, Dawn-Crowned, Magma Opus has hit a resurgence as it can be cast for as low as 2 mana with Hinata out!

This is a very powerful interaction that’s the crux of an excellent deck, but unfortunately Opus’s utility falls off extremely hard beyond that. No other deck can really make good use of Opus if we’re talking about competitive Standard options. You could play it in a ramp deck of sorts and it does have applications in Historic with Mizzix's Mastery, but that’s not many uses for a Mythic you would need to craft 4 of. With all those factors in mind, I think the tenth spot is very fair for Opus.

Next up we have Lier, Disciple of the Drowned. If I made this list a month or so ago I would have ranked this substantially higher, but since the banning of Lier’s best friend, Divide by Zero, Lier has hit a bit of a lull relegated to just sideboard play. However, cftsoc is trying to bring Lier back by winning a Set Championship qualifier with a deck playing four main deck!

Right now I would still consider Lier to be a pretty narrow card as it’s just starting to see play again, but the power level is absolutely no joke. Unless you have an express idea of where you want to put it, I would hold off on crafting Lier, but it’s so good I feel like it’ll creep up this list soon enough.

Coming in 8th we have Wrenn and Seven. I hope you know I really wanted to put this in 7th, btu I have to be accurate in my judgements! Wrenn and Seven had a rough time in Standard as it went from a one of the most played cards, to completely unplayable due to Alrund's Epiphany, back into the realm of playability.

It’s still taking its time coming back into the forefront of Standard as there are a lot of strong options for later in the game, but considering you can put this in pretty much any Green deck, I think this is generally a safe craft despite it not necessarily always being the best option in that slot.

7. Sorin the Mirthless

  • Win Rate: 54.0%
  • Games Played: 19,000
  • Quantity: 2-3
  • Variety of Decks Using This: Low-Medium

Stealing 7th from Wrenn and Seven we have Sorin the Mirthless. Sorin is a pretty simple case, it’s good, not amazing, you want a few copies, never a lot, it sees play in some decks, not too many. It’s just a very solid card all around and really only sees little play in other decks as there aren’t that many competitive Black decks in Standard.

That said, if you’re playing Black in your Standard deck, you’re likely playing some amount of Sorin in your 75 making it a reasonable craft, but far from necessary if the Black midrange decks aren’t your speed.

Heading the bottom half of the list is Lolth, Spider Queen! Here’s another easy case, a lot of what I said about Sorin applies here, but Lolth is a bit more universally played. Reason being Black doesn’t really have good 5 drop options which lets Lolth slot in easily without much competition. That isn’t to say Lolth isn’t a great card, it certainly is and most Black decks are very happy to play it.

However, also like Sorin, Lolth only comes in at the bottom half of the list since there isn’t much variety of decks it can be played in.

Coming in 5th for our list we have The Wandering Emperor! This card is an absolute power house and despite it being new, is already seeing large amounts of play. Since it’s pretty ubiquitously good, you can pretty much play it in any White deck and it’s likely to be fine as all 3 abilities can lend itself to any type of strategy.

I have this at fifth only because despite how good it is and the ability to play it in any deck, it’s still not played in a huge variety of decks. That’s likely to change in the future, but until then, I think this is a fair ranking That said, I would still say this is a very safe craft as a 2 of if not more.

Coming in fourth we have one of the coolest Mythics to come out in the last few years, The Meathook Massacre. This card has been integral to multiple Black strategies whether they’re sacrifice, control, midrange, you name it. Furthermore, it sees play in Historic as well as a 4 of in the sacrifice strategies there further increasing it’s utility. The last benefit to this card is that it’s completely irreplaceable, nothing in Standard does anything quite like this card.

I have this in 4th for the same reasons I had to put Sorin and Lolth lower on the list. Despite how good this card is, it’s play in other decks is pretty ow as there aren’t that many good Black decks in Standard. However, if you are going to play Black, you’re definitely going to need minimum 2 copies of this making this a super safe bet.

3. Mascot Exhibition

  • Win Rate: 54.4%
  • Games Played: 19,000
  • Quantity: 1-2
  • Variety of Decks Using This: High

Starting our top 3 Mythic crafts for Standard is Mascot Exhibition! Here’s the clearest case for a Mythic around, you really only need one copy and it can go in pretty much any deck. Any deck that is interested in using Learn cards is always going to have minimum 1 copy of this which makes this the easiest craft on the list for me.

Why this came in third and not first is really a matter of how many competitive decks use the Lesson board. This was very ubiquitous back when Divide by Zero was legal, but with that gone, the Learn cards haven’t seen nearly as much play. Despite that, if you are looking for a more budget version of decks or like having access to the Learn board, this is a very powerful and easy card to add to your decks!

Coming in second for this list is the extremely powerful Goldspan Dragon. Similar to previous entries, if you’re playing Red, you’re playing Goldspan Dragon. The difference is Red is in a greater variety of decks compared to Black making this an awesome craft. I can think of at least 5 highly competitive options all using Goldspan Dragon and I’m sure that number isn’t changing anytime soon.

The only downside to Goldspan Dragon is that you’re almost always going to be playing 4, but considering how good it is, I don’t thin that’s an issue for most people.

1. Agadeem's Awakening, Emeria's Call , and Shatterskull Smashing

  • Games Played: 9,900, 13,000, & 22,000
  • Quantity: 1-2
  • Variety of Decks Using This: Very High

Coming in first we have the Mythics that are so obvious, you may have not even considered they would be at the top. Lands are universally powerful as every deck needs them, and for MDFC lands, they are very strong in application. Not every deck in that color will want to use an MDFC, but thankfully, you can easily slot in 1-2 copies of the corresponding land and probably will be right to do so.

I left off Turntimber Symbiosis and Sea Gate Restoration as they see play in very few decks, but the three listed above (especially Shatterskull Smashing) see plenty of play in a wide variety of decks. The only downsides to crafting these is that they will rotate next year and they’re much less flashy than some of the other options (most decks could even go without), but you really can’t waste your wildcards on these as they are so easy to play.

That’s it for the list! Do you agree with the order of the cards or think I missed out on a better Mythic? Let me know in the comments!
