Historic Mythic with Enchantress Twiddle Storm: Fun & Jank Episode 31
Plum revives Enchantress Twiddle Storm with new upgrades, using enchantments for ramp and card draw, leading the deck all the way to Mythic this season.
Hello! Plum here, and welcome back to Fun & Jank Episode 31!
There are some decks I just love to play, even though I know they might not be the best choices in the current meta. There’s been a few we’ve covered in these articles that I revisit constantly, such as Kami-kaze,10-Land Red, and Naya Warriors. But there’s another list that I decided to take a look at recently that we covered waaaaaay back in Episode 4.
I loved this concept: a twiddle storm combo deck that replaced Lotus Field with enchantments that generated excess mana which also could be used as an engine alongside Sythis or Enchantress's Presence. The problem? The meta just got too fast for it to do anything anymore.
But as always, I can’t help myself. I couldn’t just let go of that deck. I knew the idea was solid; it just needed a little refinement to catch up to the current pace of the game. Enter some newer cards that helped breathe life into the deck—Stock Up, Hidden Strings, and more recently, Roiling Dragonstorm.
In this episode, I want to chat about how this list evolved from a nostalgic deck idea into the version that carried me all the way to Mythic this season.
So let’s dive into the changes and see how these new cards gave an old favorite the boost it needed.
Archetype Background
Let’s first look at the skeleton of what we’re doing here. At it’s heart, this is a storm deck, and storm decks have 3 main goals:
Ramp Up Mana: The first thing you need to do in a Storm deck is build up enough mana to cast multiple spells in one turn. This is often done using cards that generate mana or give you extra resources, like Lion's Eye Diamond, Dark Ritual or in the case of Twiddle storm, Lotus Field.
Chain Cheap Spells: You then cast a series of cheap spells (like cantrips or rituals) that give you more mana or card advantage. The more cheap spells you cast, the more copies you make of your Storm spell.
Win the Game: Most lists will try winning with the namesake mechanic, casting something like Tendrils of Agony or Grapeshot to close out the game. There are other ways to win these days, but these are most classic examples.
Twiddle Storm is a more recent take on these decks replacing the need for rituals with the small combo of Lotus Field and multiple Twiddle effects to keep the chain of spells going.
With that basic outline in mind let’s look at the way I used enchantments to achieve those same 3 goals in our version in the Historic Format.
The key difference between our version of Twiddle Storm and the more traditional storm decks is the way we ramp up mana. Instead of leaning on Lotus Field and other fast mana rituals, we rely on enchantments to not only ramp us, but also provide card draw, creating a much more resilient engine for our storm turns. Let’s break down the enchantment-heavy approach that drives this deck:
Ramp: We’re using cards like Utopia Sprawl, Wolfwillow Haven, and Runaway Growth to ramp our mana by placing them (usually) on a single forest. Any combination of two or more of these on a single land makes it the equivalent of a Lotus Field or better.
Runaway Growth is an interesting piece of tech for this deck. I originally brewed this deck when this card was added to Arena, but ended up cutting it in later versions. But the more I played with it, the more I realized how powerful it was alongside our untap effects. The fact that it continuously gives us more mana over the course of the turn makes it must-have in my opinion.
Sanctum Weaver is disgustingly strong, and provides some much needed redundancy when it come to mana generation in our deck. Similar to Runaway Growth, this card only gets better as we chain more and more enchantments during our turn, making it add more and more mana to our pool. It also taps for all 5 colors of mana, allowing us to play a variety of win conditions to wish for.
Chaining Spells: Hidden Strings and Vizier are the key part of this deck, allowing us to untap our mana generators, meaning we can keep casting more spells, generating more mana, and dig deeper into our deck. Strings is potentially the biggest buff this deck received because it can untap TWO of our mana generators at once. Weaver + Nykthos, Weaver + Weaver, Enchanted Land + Weaver, etc. It can generate incredible amounts of mana for just 1U with the proper set up.
Stock Up is just plain good and I don’t think I need to tell you why, so let me direct you to a card that’s punching above it’s weight in our deck: Roiling Dragonstorm. Early versions of my deck played 3 colors, splashing white for Sythis and , but Dragostorm let me cut those completely. It sees two cards on its own, but with Eidolon of Blossoms or Presence on the field, we can easily draw 3+ cards off a single Dragonstorm. This card has been absolutely incredible and does a much better job at generating card advantage than anything else I’ve tried.
The rest of our draw power comes from Eidolon of Blossoms and Enchantress's Presence. Meaning every ramp enchantment or Dragonstorm we play gives us more gas to continue going off.
Winning the Game: In this deck, we bring in Fae of Wishes to serve as our “win condition toolbox.” It allows us to grab a win-con based on what the opponent is playing, what kind of mana we have available, or the number of cards in our deck. We have a lot of options at our disposal, and I’ll usually choose the easiest route to victory.
I wish for Banefire or Tendrils of Agony the most, because it’s easy to chain together spells and generate mana. However, if the opponent has something like Leyline of Sanctity or Teferi's Protection we may end up grabbing Approach or Jace instead.
I have a couple other inclusions in the side for niche situations, one of which is Energy Refractor. There’s been multiple occasions where I’m forced to combo off with just an enchanted land, giving me limited access to blue mana from Utopia Sprawl, while still being able to generate 10+ green mana every time I twiddle it. Refractor is there as a wish target in order to filter our mana to keep the chain going while we dig for another Fae of Wishes.
Gameplay
We played multiple iterations of this list on stream. Check out the VOD above to see my thought process during our matches and feel free to skip through to see the deck in action! We actually ran quite hot and finished this stream going 13-1!
The deck is deceptively fast, and we achieved multiple Turn-3 and Turn-4 wins during our run. After playing more off stream and refining t down to the Simic version, I made it to Mythic with a 65% win rate over ~50 games.
Not too shabby, eh?
I also happened to record my win-and-in game to Mythic against Grixis Frog while off stream. Definitely worth a watch if you’d like to hear my decision process over the course of the match. (or not, I know I sound like a drunk 12 year old sometimes)
Closing Thoughts
There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing a homebrew deck of mine make it all the way to Mythic. It’s proof that, with the right tweaks and a bit of creativity, even the most janky ideas can find success in the right environment. This isn’t just a deck I threw together—it’s a product of careful refinement and the understanding that there’s always room for innovation in Historic.
This deck is particular just really scratches my brain in all the right ways. Not only was it fun to craft and refine, but the gameplay always feels super rewarding, as it does when playing most storm decks. Every game is like trying to solve a puzzle and it makes your wins that much more rewarding when all of the pieces click into place!
Thanks for reading.
