It has been a rollercoaster of a day as Wizards of the Coast kick started their 30th Magic Anniversary Celebration by announcing a bunch of products, including a non-tournament legal, limited edition product that costs $999 for four booster packs:
While that part of it wasn’t relevant for MTG Arena players (thankfully yet), we still got to see a glimpse of upcoming products such as the new Mishra card in The Brothers’ War, announcement of Shadows over Innistrad Remastered in 2023, and Explorer Anthology 2 later this year.
Among this rollercoaster of revelations, while not an official product announcement with all the fanfare, Hasbro held their Investor Day 2022 and announced their plans to increase profits by 50% over the next three years. Cynthia Williams, the President of Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming, included some titbits on some new Magic products coming in 2024 from the Universes Beyond product line, a series that combines the gameplay of Magic: The Gathering with worlds, characters, and stories of other IPs.
We’ve already seen a few so far with Street Fighter, Fortnite, Warhammer 40,000, Transformers, Doctor Who, and most importantly, Lord of the Rings as its own standalone set that will also be coming to MTG Arena. Here are the ones planned for 2024 – whether they will be a small Secret Lair set or a bigger product remains to be seen as no other details were given other than the names of the IPs.
The popular role playing game series, Final Fantasy has its own TCG already, a bit of extra promotion couldn’t hurt. The game has been enjoying success with the MMORPG and the remake of one of its most popular edition, Final Fantasy 7. It will be interesting to see how all 15 games (16 in 2023) will be distributed.
Another video game cross over mentioned, the Assassin’s Creed game franchise is one of the biggest ones and a collaboration with Magic as similar fantasy themed worlds seems to be a more frictionless one compared to vastly different ones such as The Walking Dead or Fortnite.
While not technically Universes Beyond, Post Malone has been a big celebrity name advocating for Magic: The Gathering over the past year. He has so far appeared in numerous YouTube channels, marketing promotions, such as the Whatnot promotion where a player defeated him in a match for $100,000, and even a special promotional card made for him by Wizards of the Coast:
Well, they are one-upping this by dedicating a whole Secret Lair product line to Post Malone, according to Cynthia WIlliams. There are no other details other than it’s in the works.
It has been a wild few weeks of Magic: The Gathering as players are bombarded with product releases left and right. While a lot of them won’t be reaching MTG Arena yet (other than Lord of the Rings, which has been confirmed already) it will be interesting to see how Wizards of the Coast pushes these products as they seek further profit growth.
