What is Oko’s Madness?
The master of ceremonies has arrived! Now let go the shackles of your courtly Realm and embrace the chaos of the Wilds! The very land shifts under your feet and impossible creatures appear out of thin air to join the fray. You’re not dreaming. It’s just getting weird.
Each player begins the game with a 60-card deck containing only basic lands and an Oko’s Whims emblem that has the following abilities:
- Creatures you control have base power and toughness 3/3 and are Elks in addition to their other types.
- Pay 1, Discard a card: Create a token that’s a copy of a random creature with converted mana cost 8 or less. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.
The creature pool is from all creatures available in MTG Arena, with additional cards (the ones datamined for the last Momir event). The following creature tokens can also appear when creating a token through the Oko’s Whims emblem:
- Baleful Force
- Bedlam Reveler
- Borborygmos Enraged
- Crash of Rhinos
- Gigantomancer
- Griselbrand
- Hoverguard Sweepers
- Magmatic Force
- Scaled Wurm
- Tidespout Tyrant
- Wolf Pack
Tips and Strategies
Before we start, the most important thing to clarify is that each activation of the Oko’s Whim Emblem will generate any random creature mana cost 8 or less (and then it becomes a 3/3). If the regular Momir’s Madness was 90% luck and 10% strategy, this event looks like it becomes 99% luck and maybe 1% strategy! Having said that, we are here to have fun (among the sadness we are experiencing from various issues…) but also get the required five wins in a timely manner. Here is an overview of some tips and strategies so you can get an edge over your opponents. Note: If there are any more worthwhile tips shared, more will be added here.
- Play first! The additional card is not likely not worth the tempo loss. Starting on the first turn you will get a 3/3 creature to get the ball rolling.
- On the second turn, you can play two creatures, and on the third turn, you can activate the emblem up to 3 times. After that, you will likely have run out of cards and the game will have been decided by then depending the difference in creature’s abilities of both players.
- For this reason, it might be best just to play two lands and hold on to the rest. The more lands you play, the less creatures you may end up getting!
- The lands you play may be used for activated abilities of creatures.
- Activate your emblem first before the combat phase to account for creatures with haste or buffing abilities.
- Most creatures will end up a 3/3 with some exceptions. For example, Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig will start off as being a 3/3 with four +1/+1 counters, making it a 7/7. This makes combat maths relatively simple as most creatures will end up just trading with each other and it will come down to who gets creatures with more relevant abilities. For example, if you get an Exclusion Mage, you get to kill one of your opponent’s creatures.
- Flying creatures are at a premium if the game goes longer, so try not to trade them if you don’t have to.
- Yes, if you happen to summon Demonlord Belzenlok, you will lose the game, though this is now a one in a thousand chance to happen.
